As much as I try, I can't root against Iran and if you knew my background you'd realise I'd be well justified to. Maybe because despite the regime, I'm very aware of the previous regime, but also of Persian-Iranian culture, which is unbelievable. I have much more ambivalent to negative views of Saudi Arabia in contrast.

In my experience living in an area of Ontario with many Persian families and having worked with many Persian immigrants most love the national team and soccer but despise the government. I'm not surprised many might be against the regime but want to support the national team.

I just want to add a personal note to this thread.  
I was speaking to my Iranian friend about who we would cheer for if our birth nations played against our home nation, Canada. . I'm Italian by birth and I've been asked this question several times over the years. The answer is always Canada. Canada, because it is the nation that gave me the good life that I have enjoyed since my family moved here in 1966. 
My Iranian friend will be joining me in the Voyageurs section on June 5th. His first Canada match in our excellent section. He is excited to cheer on the nation that gave him his good life. He is excited to to wear his Bayern, Davies jersey. If you see him give him a high 5. 
One more thing, his parents told him to boycott the match. Seems that there are a few Iranians (just like us) who are divided politically and may not attend the match just because, by doing so, gives support to the oppressive nation they left. Maybe not a good reason not to attend and perhaps that is a conversation for another day. 
I worked in North Vancouver for 27 years and made many great relationships with many Iranian people. Most came here for a better life just like many of us. I think it will be a special event for our city. A celebration of the beautiful game by 2 up and coming football nations. 

Is there going to be a giant fight or something? What are we talking about? There will be 55k people there. The majority of Persian people in Vancouver live in North Vancouver and they're engineers and dentists. Their kids go to Catholic school and private school. There will be a few thousand Iranians and a packed house with lots of fun, excitement and love. It will be a great day for soccer in Canada 

Don’t underestimate that many Iranians will come from Toronto and Montreal to watch this game .

there's a sizable Iranian community in the lower mainland.  I'm not sure if it's comparable Toronto or Montreal, but I could see a good turnout for this match.  There will be good support for Iran..but maybe not as much as say 4 years ago due to progress of CanMNT in the last 2 years.

Ah ok.. i was not aware of this.  Well, the WC is being played at stadiums where countless people died under brutal working conditions.  While the violence is horrible, if Fifa was indifferent to the working conditions leading to deaths, then they definitely will turn a blind eye to the violence. 
Speaking of which, Mexico had a bunch of people die a few months ago at a league game.  Not sure if they even got called out by Fifa for that...
