Let's face it - even if they find an opponent now, the window is squandered. There's not enough time to properly promote the game anymore to make money off of it and they're not likely to be able to find a quality opponent to push them anyway. 
I wouldn't be surprised if they announce an "intersquad game" now with proceeds going to charity. 

What's disappointing is teams who aren't event going to Qatar, ie Paraguay, have good friendlies lined up this window.  They're playing Japan, S Korea, and Mexico.  
I know Bolivia has been mentioned but they're a weak side outside of La Paz.  

There's a good reason for that though (well, one of the good reasons). South Korea, Japan and Mexico all have (or in the case of Japan, are likely to have) South American teams in their groups. They would each want to play against a similar style opponents rather than just the usual teams from Asia or Concacaf they are accustomed to playing. Paraguay is a good fit for that, especially as they don't have to play any South American Nations League games (since there is no such thing).
The teams that will mostly likely want to play us are the teams that have the US in their group. Right now, the only two other teams are England, who will be busy playing such slouches as Germany and Italy, and....Iran.

the latest they could/should announce is tomorrow morning... perhaps they're scrambling and burning the midnight oil this weekend to find something, or they would prefer to announce Monday AM given how the news cycle works... (ie sunday typically a quiet day, ppl on vacation).

I'm pretty much sick of the Forest hype, "Champions of Europe, too big for The Championship", I hope they get beat and either Laryea plays next season or they sell him! I get the patience and learning experience angle but he is not that young and has lots of experience, if he can't make the bench I would suspect they really don't rate/trust him and it might be best for all if he moves on!

What exactly are they speaking out on? I don't see the players addressing any of those issues in Osorio's comments, the Westhead TSN video I posted earlier in the thread indicated that the players concerns were to do with "playing in an atmosphere of protest" and all to do with the negative "environment" that would be at the stadium with anticipated protests going on. The players stance on this evidently changed from the early days when Cavallini said they needed this match to help prepare for the World Cup, dismissing the PM's condemnation in the process. It seems to be that what caused the stance to change was the media & government stirring up/exacerbating public disapproval so that by the time the roster was released the players felt that it would poor a poor environment to play in. I don't see reason to believe that the players suddenly became concerned with Iran's domestic lack of women's rights mid-week, I think it's all to do with the circumstances changing thanks to the two main protagonists in that regard - the government and the clueless media with their largely one-sided, ill-informed coverage of the issues (case in point, I had to explain to another 3 people today off-line that the match against Ukraine isn't likely to happen, at least not for early June - it's not because the people in question are simpletons, they are simply as casual sports fans getting misinformed by the media).

In terms of alternates... would Qatar be a possible team?  They are ranked 51, competed in the Gold Cup last year, and from the looks of it, are available until the the WC (?)

I mean, as hilarious as the clip of the Ukrainian official saying he would walk next door to the CSA and ask them if they are ready to play Ukraine when its not Canada's availability that is the problem, this is emblematic of the problem with the clueless non-sports media in this country. I had just have to finish explaining to a casual sports fan off-board that the CSA can't just turn around and immediately announce and sell tickets in advance for a "Canada vs. Possibly Ukraine if they lose to Scotland three days before" soccer match on the basis of the clip you mentioned. The clueless-about-soccer faction of the media - which is the vast majority of it - has had an effect on things, and a massively adverse one at that.

Also highly skeptical there was any truth to that rumour and if I had to bet, would say Cavallinis view speaks for the majority. 
Professional footballers know more than anyone that the players on Iran's national team ( and representing other countrys with authoritarian regimes) are athletes just like them, not political animals. Eustaqio also shares a club dressing room with their star striker (Mehdi Taremi).
