2024 u15 Concacaf Championship

Recommended Posts

u15 squad for Concacaf Championship was released just 2 days before it starts. Jasmine Mander would have likely been replaced as the manager given she would still be at the Olympics. But she would have still been the main input provider into the 18 players selected.

New manager Tina Cook doesn't get much of intro in the press release. But she is listed by the Caps as head coach at Calgary BMO Academy Centre. She is from Barrie and previous roles include York University, Toronto Metropolitan University & Guyana Women’s U20 Assistant Coach; Vaughan Women’s High Performance & OPDL Coach.  Her playing experience was at AO Trikala, Greece; Graceland University, Iowa (NAIA).

Canada will compete in League A, Group B in Costa Rica. On August 5th, Canada plays Puerto Rico at 1100 EDT. On August 6th, Canada plays El Salvador at 1300. On August 8th, Canada plays Mexico at 1300. August 9th and 11th will have semis/final. All matches are on Concacaf Go or Youtube channel.

As usual, NDC Ontario dominates the squad with 7 players. But this time, there are 4 players coming from outside of the holy trinity of NDC/Caps/CFM. Caps have 4 players while CFM has 3.

By province, ON leads with 9 players, followed by Quebec at 4, BC at 3 and one each from AB/MB. By local clubs, the suburbs dominate led by Unionville, Mississauga. Markham & Laval.

Kindel is likely former Cap Steve's daughter/relative. Don't recognize many of these other names, though; at least we know we will have Christ on our side, especially important during these tough times.

McLeod should be the most known as she played in u17 Concacaf qualifying earlier this year.

I assume Gabriela Istocki is the sister of Nikolina who has played on the u15 & u17 teams.

Canada takes it 1-0 in a 70 minute match.

Largely dominated. Only looked in trouble defending corners. Usually Canada wins against tier 2 teams by being fitter, faster & stronger but Puerto Rico were largely on par. Good to see most of the play coming through the middle of the park. More willing to take shots outside the box. But finishing is also elusive for this age group.

Isabella Lanzillotta from Liverpool FC IA (rebranded from North Mississauga) scored in the 43rd minute with a technically proficient move and shot outside of the box.

Another 1-0 victory. El Salvador were down to 10 at the 25th minute for a red card denying a goal scoring opportunity. NDC Ontario's Hennessy scored in the 50th minute off a good through ball into the box by Asante.

7 changes to the starting 11. More disjointed performance than match 1. Chances continue to be created but low probability shots favoured in the box rather than looking for open player in the box. El Salvador hit the woodwork twice while Canada did it once. Corners continue to trouble Canada.

With Mexico leading in goal differential by 3, Canada will need to defeat Mexico to avoid the US in the semis.

Mexico won 3-1 on a hat trick by Evelyn Contreras.

By controlling the midfield, Mexico dominated the match. But Mexico largely didn't carve up Canada in the final third. Mexico did have 2 players who know how to strike ball sweetly. 2 of the goals were due to lax Canadian defending and a long distance goal was due a bit of lax goalkeeping.

Canada had no attempts on goal in the first half. In the second half, there were 3 attempts from the combo of McLeod and sub Madden Assante from Calgary's New Frontier. After a deft move in the box, NDC Ontario's McLeod scored with a well placed strike.

Canada plays the USA in the semis.

USA won on penalties 4-2 after a 1-1 draw over 70 minutes. Canada will play Costa Rica in third place match after Las Ticas fell 2-3 to Mexico.

This was similar to Mexico match in many respects as US dominated the match. Difference was there was only one bad clearance (but difficult to execute) that led to the US deflected goal while Mexico match saw 2 basic clearances bungled and one goalkeeping error.

US did create a bit more chances than Mexico especially in the last 10 minutes but only one shot required a good save. Most of the chances was due to 14 year old Mak Whitham who recently signed with Gotham FC. Otherwise, the US players looked ordinary compared to previous editions.

Canada again had no goal attempts in the first half. Midfield play was largely non-existent. Canada's goal by defender Christ-Mayron Brou came off a corner kick that was bungled by the keeper who was just subbed in at the half. Otherwise, there was only other shot towards goal. This followed into the penalties as first two takers missed wide.

Canada wins third place match 2-1 over Costa Rica.

Canada actually took a shot in the first half and produced a transition goal from Istocki. McLeod came on as a sub in the second half and scored by intercepting a sideways pass back to the keeper.

USA won it all again with a 3-0 defeat of Mexico with 2 late goals.

Given we don't know the quality of players coming to the NSL yet, it is hard to say if any of this group of Canada players can make the NSL. But if it is largely uSports/L1 players, McLeod looks most capable. It should help her development being challenged vs having it too easy playing for NDC-ON.

Otherwise, given the team barely created chances and attempted shots, the backline players showed the most talent with 3 to 4 showing potential. They showed a good mix of dribbling, progressive passing & speed with only some blunders.

I was too busy to watch any of these games. Thank you for the wonderful series game report.
