mpg_29
Argentina is a weird team. Watching the game we played them and the one last night they don't always look as dominant as you would think given their record but somehow always manage to pull it off in the end. jhoops__ and TGAA_Star

They never really looked dominant in the World Cup iirc, maybe the the first 60 minutes of regulation in the final but that's it. It's really a few moments of sheer brilliance, but mostly some sound solid play by above average players. Messi leads this team, but the supporting cast believes so much they're able to step in and provide their own moments as well. They're just clicking and riding a good steady flow of confidence. Martinez won it for them in the penalties. Messi/Argentina are the only ones to "miss" the net. All of Ecuador's shots could have been goals. Freakin hit the side netting from a penalty. Perfect shot with that kind of pressure, takes some serious balls to put it that close to the post. It's ok, it'll be so much sweeter when we beat Argentina. History would've had an asterisk on our Copa win if we had avoided Argentina. kungfucious

When he actually gets the ball he can make things happen but that seems more much infrequent than years past. He is walking most of the match. You can say they were unlucky against Venezuala but should have beat Mexico. JAVIERF

Not according to the report from The Athletic https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5617713/2024/07/05/felix-sanchez-ecuador-sacked-copa-america/ ”Sanchez, 48, was appointed to lead Ecuador on a four-year contract in March 2023.” Gian-Luca and JAVIERF 1
Obinna
My understanding of people more plugged into conmebol was that Ecuador are doing good despite Sanchez, not because of him. Seems like he's not terrible, but not going to take them up a level. From that perspective the sacking makes sense. It's also in-line with what we saw this tournament as well. There was a lot of hype and excitement over Ecuador and many expected them to top group B, but they did not. Then, they did well last night, but that (in my opinion) was because Argentina were not good more than Ecuador was great! JAVIERF
