Road to Colombia - 2024 u20 World Cup

Recommended Posts

Typical Canada u20 play vs better teams: dominated in possession, lots of corners ceded, can't string more than 2 passes in attacking half, easily dispossessed, little to no chances created, don't force keeper to make any real saves, poor throw-ins, at times lax defending.

Germany drew US nil-nil last week.

Starting front three were Allen, Jourde & Rose. Midfield was Johnson, Gray & Francois, Back line was McBride, Markesini, Okeke & Collin. GK was Fenwick. Most of the starters were subbed out in the second half including 4 at the half.

We draw France and Brazil (tough!) but as a consolation we get minnows Fiji.

If we draw Fiji that's almost a match where you can play a full squad rotation and rest your starting XI.

I think Fiji will be our second match, so we could do a full squad rotation :)

What are people's guesses as to when Priestman officially gets the sack?

I'm wondering if the rest of her staff will be out too.

I think @narduch has the more relevant question.

We face France in the opening match of the U20 at the end of the month.

Were there drone shenanigans at youth level?

Do the accusations of a toxic workplace or bad behaviour extend to people in the ranks of the youth teams?

Will Cindy Tye be our coach later this month?

Will Emma Humphries (Bev's wife) be with the group?

I have no answers!

All good questions.

First time that professional players are on the u20 squad with the inclusion of Allen and Smith. 2022 returnees are Smith and Jourde.

3 NDC players with 2 from the Caps that have hinted of going pro next year. The Caps players will likely head to Colombia from Mexico after playing Club America on Wednesday. They'll miss out on Sante Fe match on September 4th.

The rest are with US colleges with 2 each from Notre Dame, Providence and Wisconsin. 8 or 50% are on top 25 teams. Waite plays for Nebraska which is the highest ranked at #6.

15 players from Ontario with 11 from the GTA, 3 from BC, 2 from Quebec and 1 from Nova Scotia. 17 played in the Concacaf qualifiers and 17 also played in the Concacaf Championship last year. 16 played in the Germany-based friendlies from the spring.

Notable absentee is Rosa Maalouf who just scored her first goal for Texas over the weekend.

As comparison, US squad has 8 NWSL rookies (highest number of pros ever), 75% of college players are on top 25 teams including 4 from #1 ranked Florida State, 1 non-college/pro player, only 10 players from Concacaf Championship and 1 player has been at a senior team camp. US squad is also regional concentrated with 8 from Cali and 3 from Texas.

Any idea where this tournament will be televised?   One Soccer?

This is a FIFA tournament, not a CONCACAF event. It's likely that Bell Media (TSN, RDS) own the broadcasting rights.

Edit:

The first match will be on TSN1 (TV)

and TSN+ (online).

Full TSN schedule has been posted. Only a limited set of matches will be on linear TSN. These include Canada matches, semis and final.

Everything else is only on TSN+.

FFF manager Sandrine Ringler selected 21 players from French leagues. There are 4 from Stade de Reims and 3 players from Lyon. There are 7 players from D2 or lower.

Before flying to Colombia, the Bleuettes trained at Clairefontaine from 12-20 August.

Apparently, the top 3 French clubs didn't release 7 players requested.

CBF Futebol manager Rosana Augusto 21 player squad arrived in Colombia today.

Ex 4 players, all the squad plays in Brasil. Unlike the senior team that is dominated by Corinthians, there are only 3 on the u20 list. There are 5 from São Paulo and 4 from Internacional. 3 play in US colleges including Lara Dantas for #1 pre-season ranked Florida State. 1 player is with Olivia Smith's former club. A couple of expected squad players not on team due to injuries/not match fit.
