If FIFA does the right thing and bans Israel, Italy and France would be available in October.

Unfortunately they were supposed to make their ruling on July 20 but have delayed it until August 31 now.

I can't remember the last time FIFA did the right thing.

Excellent couple of mins of video entertainment.  The extended version with the other Canada goals was even better.

it was definitely a delicious time.  A nice reward for being a fan, and then some.  I remember watching this Panama panel lose their shirt, and being like "about time".

That being said.  Absolutely nothing can be taken for granted.  A Panama match is a first-class opponent, and very worthwhile as a test of the entire squad.

OK. If you want to make such a comment...I'll bite. How is banning Isreal doing the right thing?

Well if you are going to ban Russia for invading Ukraine, shouldn't you ban Israel for committing genocide in Gaza?

Besides even if you want to take it down to a sporting level alone. Since October 7 Israel has murdered a FIFA referee and 3 Palestinian National team players.

Without comparing the behavior of Netanyahu and Putin (suffice it to say I don't have exactly a high opinion of Netanyahu at this stage, to say the least, but Putin manages to be significantly worse in my book) I'd argue that from an organizational standpoint, FIFA is simply under nearly as much pressure with Israel as they were for Russia.

FIFA objectively didn't want to give more than a slap on the wrist to Russia and they only accepted to do more when it became apparent that it was simply impossible for a Russian club or national team to play against anyone in UEFA in anything looking like a safe environment and/or that most of UEFA would simply point blank boycott any game they are involved in.

This is simply not the case for Israel, as FIFA-sanctioned their move to UEFA decades ago to avoid precisely that situation with clubs and nationals teams from Arab countries.

It's about consistency. You either ban nations for crimes against humanity, or you don't.

To go way back to some international relationship education many years ago, this is not quite accurate.

Many, many countries have committed crimes against humanity - whether recognised by the ICC or not.

Russia was suspended by sporting bodies because they invaded a sovereign state.

There is no mention of crimes against humanity in the statement by FIFA and UEFA.

https://www.fifa.com/en/articles/fifa-uefa-suspend-russian-clubs-and-national-teams-from-all-competitions

Edit: If you realy want to get technical, Crimes Against Humanity are not codified in international law. And things that we would call that actually fall under the ICC - International Criminal Court (deals with indivdiduals), rather than the ICJ - International Court of Justice (which deals with states).   For instance, the recent ICJ "Advisory Opinion" on Israel deals with the legality of occupation, not any actual alleged crimes.

I guess your definition of genocide is different than mine.

Just saw this on Wikipedia, is this something that's been rumored? Or is it just a zealous dream from a Malaysian fan?

Malaysia still plan on playing an away friendly in October, but they plan to remain in Asia.

For their October friendlies, Mexico is hosting a team TBD in Mexico before staying in Mexico to host the #USMNT in Guadalajara.

Apparently the (location) front runners for Mexico's other friendly in October are

Cancún

&

Morelia

but who could the opponent be?

A minnow from Asia? Or will we play Mexico twice in two months?

It's kind of boring, but maybe playing Mexico in back-to-back windows makes sense for both nations.

Sorry to keep this topic going...but it was bothering me in light of the last 48 hours.

"If you live in a glass house, don't throw stones"

Canada has no moral high ground as it relates to domestic Human Rights (our treatment of indigenous populations and recent treatment of refugees for example) nor Fair play. Our opinions matter not to FIFA/Ukraine/Russia/Israel/Hamas. Just stay humble and worry about ourselves and improving our own society and sporting standards. We aren't the worlds (morality) police force or peacekeepers. Signed, a proud Canadian.

I hope there'll be friendly games at Montreal. For the men's national team.

I don't see any friendlies outside of BC Place and BMO Field until after the World Cup, simply as they'll be wanting to play on the pitches they will have at the World Cup.

Though when does the grass go in at BC Place - or did that happen this winter?

WTF? They could only get a third division team?

Permanent grass? Well, I guess that's where we'll see most of the friendlies in the next 18 months.
