It's one thing to have a bunch of guys called up and not available for this make up match vs LAFC, but three key guys (Ahmed, Cubas, and especially Gauld) are battling injuries. Hopefully none of these guys returns further banged up.

And now I see that Gauld is questionable for Sunday with a knee issue.

what the heck is sartini doing? instead of building up the team to go strong and in form in the playoffs hes rotating constantly and the team is now going into the playoffs completely out of form with two draws and five losses in the last seven...

Injuries. National team call ups. Suspensions. A bit unlucky. Some poor decisions. He himself was suspended today.

To be fair, this last loss is 200% attributable to Sartini not being in the bench 😐

Can't miss an opportunity to point out how absurd this is!

the entire season has just been absurd. like even beyond the on-field performance part of things, this season felt like such a haphazard slog due to how mls has completely derailed their format/schedule

we're a year and a half away from the world cup and this is what we have:
- 18/29 teams qualifying for the playoffs, effectively rendering most games pointless and lowering the stakes from a league that already had next to zero with no pro/rel

- MLS embarrassingly throwing a tantrum and walking away with their toys when it comes to the open cup
- a midseason tournament that maaaaybe like 6 cities in the league actually get behind (cali/texas) and has virtually zero competitive stakes or legitimacy due to having no games in mexico
- said tournament completely ruins any chance for the league to capitalize on the summer timeframe where almost nothing else is happening and the weather is good

- condensing the regular season to such an absurd degree that piles on midweek games/international break games where the already just-okay on-field product deteriorates even more; you maybe only get like 24/34 games in the season where your optimal lineup plays

- said lineups/rosters are comically unbalanced and have minimal depth because the cheap pathetic owners hold the league back, which gets exposed against the international standard of football time and time again

and most of this is paywalled even though you're competing on two fronts against other north american sports leagues (which are the best in the world in the respective sports) and other better soccer leagues, all of which are more accessible 😅

They sure exposed a terrible defensive team.  Gauld and company punished abysmal marking and organization.

Big mo coming into LA on Sunday, for sure.  Also, massive props to the crew who went down on the bus and other transport to Portland to support the team.

Great bounce back from such a bad run of form coming into the playoffs.

And they kept a clean sheet. Scoring against Portland seemed possible, but keeping them off the score sheet seemed like more of a long shot.

Formats change seemed to work. Thought more players were in more natural positions.

No. But let's see if they can at least win a game in the series this time.

A great win by the Whitecaps.

I hope they win against LA, too, but what is with this format? A three game series and then a single game conference semi-final? Why not a traditional home and away for both rounds? It’s the same number of games.

I'm not saying I agree with the "best of 3" format, but i did find that because goals didn't matter last year (it wasn't tie breaker) that teams that fell behind tended to open up and just go for it. So rather than getting conservative games with teams afraid to concede you had much more attacking playing.
