The CSA request to the FIFA Council about Article 72

Recommended Posts

The FIFA Council meeting was held earlier today.

The agenda:

"and a request from the Canadian Soccer Association concerning article 72 of the FIFA Statutes"

What is this about?

Is Article 72 about the role of the FIFA General Secretary?

The FIFA Statutes can be found here:

https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/3815fa68bd9f4ad8/original/FIFA_Statutes_2022-EN.pdf

Is this something inconsequential?

Is there a power struggle between Victor Montagliani and Fatma Samoura?

Edit:

Because the media release here is quite vague:

FIFA Statutes

The FIFA Council also decided to set up a working group across all confederations to conduct a comprehensive review of the FIFA Statutes in order to present proposals to next year’s FIFA Congress. This review shall consider the possibility to extend FIFA’s mandate to include an eFootball category as part of FIFA’s overall objectives.

72 Authorisation

Associations, leagues or clubs that are affiliated to a member association may only join another member association or take part in competitions on that member association’s territory under exceptional circumstances. In each case, authorisation must be given by both member associations, the respective confederation(s) and by FIFA.

Not sure where you're getting a power struggle/General Secretary thing from? A similar item was on council meeting 20 back in October '22, though no specific nation was named. I'm guessing it's inconsequential.

I think the PDF link is a dif document.  The articles are here:

https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/5eb2b45e547ff39f/original/ndfxogwkoukoe4dm3uk0-pdf.pdf

In this one, article 72 relates to the following:

Article 72 Authorisation

1 FIFA, its Members and the Confederations are exclusively responsible for authorising the distribution of image and sound and other data carriers of football matches and events coming under their respective jurisdiction, without any restrictions as to content, time, place and technical and legal aspects.

2 The Executive Committee shall issue special regulations to this end.

In the one you linked to ironically #72 is about allowing cross-border tems or leagues (don't get @Ansem's hopes up):

72 Authorisation

Associations, leagues or clubs that are affiliated to a member association may only join another member association or take part in competitions on that member association’s territory under exceptional circumstances. In each case, authorisation must be given by both member associations, the respective confederation(s) and by FIFA.

If it is this, then it is either about Canadian teams in the lower levels of the USL pyramid or about the 3 Canadian teams in MLS.

And one would have to believe it’s the latter.

I did say this conversation would come. This soon….well, everyone knows what side I’m on.

My understanding is that the playing out request for the three MLS teams and any others goes all the way up to FIFA every single season.
