Gold Cup 2023

Looking at this squad, I am guessing John Herdman goes with the more traditional 4-4-2 so the new defenders in the back can be supported.  However with the limited amount of midfielders called up, I wonder if he will go with the 4-3-3 system instead.

I can envision starting the usual names, and once it gets base 60 minutes, then the new guys will be subbed in.  With all the time they are spending together during the Gold Cup, hopefully they spend some time developing a scheme on how to defend the set pieces.

Good points. Lots of newer faces at the back means maybe we can truly see some auditions and experiment with four defenders at the same time.

I am looking forward to this tournament with this roster, there should be enough experience available for leadership and this is an excellent opportunity for a defender or 2 to stake a claim into the rotation! Loturi should get a chance to show he is up to it at this level, hopefully he can emulate some of the play we have seen in highlight packages! Brym and Cav will be counted on heavily in striker's roles but there should be good support from the wide players there as well!

I really hope we take advantage of this opportunity to really integrate guys who haven’t had much of a shake when called or making their first performance. We are obviously playing some weaker teams in the group stage. I just don’t want to see a lot of the veterans racking up minutes and then not seeing the Loturi types starting/playing significant minutes. Assuming we advance, go with guys who are playing best at that point

Ugbo makes sense but being there, same with Kaye.

i would have thought that JMR has done enough to merit a shot over guys like Brym and Wotherspoon and JRR. Ditto for Nelson.

it’s a strong Midfield group and a Strong defender group, but Choniere is too versatile and playing too well to be left out.

Sirois earned the right to be there, Waterman has been ok. But, let Sirois ride his chance because we will need him later on and more so if he won’t be starting. Heibert has some competition for a spot in St Louis.

Pretty happy with the squad, more regulars than I expected. I haven't had the heart to open the match thread from yesterday, but more than Davies/David/Buchanan being off, I thought Eustaquio's sub par performance really hurt us. Him being at Gold Cup, I assume/hope in better form, makes me feel like we are trying to win/continue to build.

That said, I think we need to start to move on at some point from 2022 qualification. I probably would have left Borjan and Vitoria at home. Particularly the former. He didn't look great last night.

Quite a lot to like about this squad but also some disappointing omissions.

Pros:

  • McGraw, Ahmed, Loturi likely all getting minutes, JRR too.
  • Schaffelburg deserves it on the form he has brought lately.

Cons:

  • I would have liked to have seen Kone grow more into the team and this is the tournament for it. He is still new. Buchanan would have been handy too.
  • Waterman and Heibert must be scratching there heads.
  • Choiniere must be pulling his hair out.
  • I am happy to have Borjan there as a leader within the group but I hope he doesn't take away minutes from McGill/St. Clair
  • Strikers and CM look bare. I didn't expect Jebbison to join yet but Ugbo should have been there surely.

I just got off the plane that Kone was on.  Watford preseason actually starts today and he is spending a few days with family before he heads back to England.  The kid has pretty much not had a break since the start of the last MLS season.
