Gold Cup 2023

I’m surprised they’re not using this as an opportunity to rotate in fresh blood to get ready for Nations League/World Cup Qualifying. They ditched a good bit of the old guard, but there’s still Navas (36), Waston (35), Duarte (34), Borges (35).

No Jewison Bennette hurts them. Ditto Leal (still hurt?). I expected to see Matarrita on the roster, but apparently he’s in the Ukranian Premier League now. Seems fair considering how well that Cincinnati defence played when he was there.

The lack of MLSers is because the coach seems to hate the league and the Costa Ricans in the league. The ones who were on the WC roster were exceptions because they had a good relationship with Suarez.

Surprised about no Bennette or Aguilera but apparently they might in at the Toulon tourney instead?

But yeah the general hope it seems is for the coach to fail horribly and someone else come in to properly rotate and start a new cycle properly.

From Getting CONCACAFed, a look into NL/Gold Cup squad selections.

Mexico: Diego Cocca is utilizing the bulk of his squad for both the Nations League and the Gold Cup.

His calculus is different. While Canada fans would likely be happy with just one trophy, and U.S. fans are ready to shrug off any summer struggles after the managerial shifts, Mexico fans want to win both competitions. They expect to win both competitions.

So, there’s Guillermo Ochoa ready to spend his entire summer with El Tri after a long season in Italy. There’s Julian Araujo despite needing to fight for a spot in Barcelona. There’s Cesar Montes, Edson Alvarez, Sebastian Cordova fresh off the Liga MX title. The whole (healthy) gang is here for both tournaments.

USA: Gregg Berhalter, sorry, Antho-oh, wait, Anthony Hudson BJ Callaghan likely will deploy the same strategy the U.S. used last time around. After all, splitting the squad worked with the U.S. winning both the Nations League and the Gold Cup.

Panama: While Panama’s ranks are growing, the player pool still isn’t as deep as the North American rivals. Christiansen doesn’t have the luxury of even considering whether or not to split his squad. To compete with Canada in the CNL semifinal and to try to make a deep Gold Cup run, Christiansen needs his top players in each competition.

There are a lot of Euro based players that are going to be out of contract/moving to new teams for the 2023/24 season. If it's "core" it will probably be MLS based or players that are a part of the NL squad but not starters. Wheeler saying Sept is the time to blood new players..do we even have friendlies set up???  Use the GC to cap Loturi, Choiniere, McGill if he's highly rated, McGraw, Heibert etc. These players need competitive games to test  what they can bring to the squad going forwards.

Being a bit lazy here but do we roughly have an idea when the GC roster will drop?

Not sure but the way Herdman was talking earlier he is still waiting on some of the bigger players to make a decision but he hopes most will be there. I would have thought the deadline for squads is right away though. GC starts on the 16th but Canada don't play until the 27th.

This is the problem with a Gold Cup every two years: the players can doddle with their decision. When it's every two years, they can think about catching the next one, whereas If you make every four years, there's some urgency because you might miss your window as a player.

It's also having a WC, condensed Euro league schedule, NL finals and GC all within 8 months.

So, I was just looking at this list again and noticed that at the 24th name, they start being listed in alphabetical order.  Almost as if the first 23 names will be the squad that is called and the rest are fill-ins as required.

Only interesting thing about this is seeing Brym in the first 23.  Expect a pretty similar squad as the CNL.

A drunk @El Hombre is more observant than many of us sober forum members! :D

Good catch!

Very curious what our roster will look like. So many of our guys have uncertain club situations. I would think quite a few of them will take the tournament off to figure that out

GK: McGill, possible loan; Borjan, rumoured to be demoted to #2, he may want to fight for the #1 spot with his club.

DF: Adekugbe, won't be playing for Hatayspor and likely not picked up by Galatasaray; Vitoria and Kennedy are both out of contract; Laryea, who knows where he ends up

MF: Kone, possibly loaned to Udinese; Wotherspoon, out of contract; Hutchinson, also out of contract

FW: Hoilett, out of contract; Larin, David, Davies, Buchanan, all have alot of options/rumours about where they could be next year

That's 14 of 23 on our current roster that need to figure out their club situation.

Leaves only St. Clair, Johnston (coming off an injury), Miller, Zator, Cornelius (possibly already out with an injury), Eustaquio, Loturi, Osorio (also recently injured) and Cavallini.

Ok even worse than I originally thought, 6 of the 23 that are healthy and in a stable club situation.

Davies said probably on TSN and his agent said a different thing a day later. I doubt he will be there. Especially with transfer rumors starting

I don't see either Davies or David being there, especially with the big $ transfer buzz afoot.

T&T play Guatemala in a friendly in Chester, PA tomorrow. They expect to release their Gold Cup roster on Monday or Tuesday. Interesting decision to play a friendly against a team that would be in your group. Not sure I’ve seen that before.

——

Meanwhile, Guadeloupe’s roster is out.

Norable omissions: Jérôme Roussillon (Union Berlin), Dimitri Cavaré (Sion)

——

Continuing our look at the Group D preliminary sides, things in Guyana haven’t been ideal.

“Despite concluding the 2022/2023 CONCACAF Nations League in March, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is yet to remunerate the Golden Jaguars senior men’s programme their match-day fees for the fixtures against Bermuda and Montserrat.”

The Golden Jaguars recently finished a training camp in Jamaica, and are currently supposed to be in Miami. No confirmation on a final roster yet.

——

Finally, Grenada named their roster for the preliminaries.

Notable omissions: Benjamin Ettienne (Charlston Battery), AJ Patterson (Charlston Battery), Kharlton Belmar (Richmond Kickers)

Trinidad and Tobago beat Guatemala 1-0, with the Soca Warriors converting a penalty.

Suriname and Curacao have already released their squads for the Gold Cup. Always interesting to see what dual-nationals they have recruited.

Suriname have added Delvechio Blackson (Telstar / Eerste Divisie) on defense as well as Navajo Bakboord who plays for Heracles Almelo and will play in the Eredivisie next season. Their biggest recruitment this window is Stefano Denswil who played with Club Brugge for quite some time and is now with Trabzonspor. Midfielder Dhoraso Moreo Klas (ADO Den Haag / Eerste Divisie) joins as does Joshua Sanches of (TOP Oss / Eerste Divisie). No new attackers but Mitchell te Vrede rejoins after featuring in just 3 matches since committing in 2021 (he played against us in that 4-0 thumping). He's now playing in the UAE.

Curacao have added Daijiro Chirino (PEC Zwolle) who have also been promoted to their Eredivisie and Jearl Margaritha (TOP Oss / Eerste Divisie). After many attempts they have finally added former Brighton striker Jurgen Locadia who is now playing in China after stints in Iran, MLS and Germany.

Jamaica have yet to release their final Gold Cup squad but expectation is Everton's Demarai Gray will be on the roster.

Suriname have quietly built up a very respectable side, can’t take them lightly. Curaçao aswell.

it’s good to see the level of concacaf rise.
