Canada and the 2024 Copa America

Tidbits from Athletic's Peru squad guide:

Peru's 71 year old Uruguayan manager who took over recently is called the Grandfather. Soft toys in Fossati’s image have already been spotted for sale in Lima.

Oliver Sonne, a Danish-born defender, might be hard to take your eye off him as he is fashion model whose aunt is none other than Helena Christensen.

Peru’s players have had a little something extra up their sleeves when it comes to pre-match rituals. Ernesto Carpio-Tirado is the country’s most famous magician and is so close to a number of Blanquirroja players that former manager Ricardo Gareca used to allow him to travel with the squad to away games.

The last time they failed to get out of their Copa group was in 1995, and have made the semi-finals in four of the last five editions, even finishing as runners-up in 2019.

But expectations aren't high. This team is very much a work in progress. It might be a little optimistic to expect them to form a cohesive back three or a competitive midfield in time for the Copa America.

Peru vs El Salvador friendly from Philly will be on TLN on Friday at 2030 EDT.

You can also see on Univision Canada, Colombia v Bolivia from Hartford on Saturday at 1700 EDT. And Ecuador v Honduras from Hartford on Sunday at 1530 EDT.

Ahmed & JRR for Zator and Brym.

Full roster dropping on Saturday.

This still means there are 27 players in camp.

One more will need to be dropped

Grégoire Swiderski was just there as a "training player" because he was in France wasn't he? He will drop out too. That's 26 isn't it?

Good moves. Love Ali and JRR has been on fire. Great striker pool.

I'm not counting him. When they added Tani that made it 27 players

Forgot about Tani. Maybe someone is struggling with an injury and why they haven't announced the last player getting dropped yet. Seems weird not to do it at the same time as these others.

Saying that Zator and Brym are flying back to Europe but are still in contention for the tournament is odd. We know Canada ain't paying for multiple flights so they ain't making the team.

They are on the injury reserve list, so they'd be able to replace someone if need be. And it would be Copa America that pays for it.

It wasn't. If Turner didn't have 11 saves, it's a easy Brazil win. Brazil also had twice as many shots (25) and nearly twice the quality chances. Brazil was better; Brazil is better.

The U.S. was far, far better defensively than seen against Colombia which included Turner making only 1 mistake that led to the goal.

You clearly didn’t watch the game. Alisson easily had the biggest save of the game. Most of Brazils chances were pretty tame. A draw was the most fair outcome.

It's equally sad if it's trolling or real.

Why even be an anti-Osorio zealot? It's so unbelievably odd. He's about maximized his talents/career and at his peak he was a solid/great MLS player. What's there to be mad about?

72 caps, over 4,500 minutes with 9 goals and 8 assists for Canada including some huge performances for country.  He has the most caps of any of our players on our current roster and over 400 minutes more than Piette who has the next most caps and minutes.

It's one thing to debate his inclusion in our 26 man squad (although I don't see much of a debate with our current group of midfielders) but it's another thing to have so much hate for a guy who's given so much for this program.

For Whitecaps fans, how much right or left back has Ahmed actually played?

The roster switches they have done were fairly predictable (in fact, most did predict that these changes would be made), but I am not sure that, for the last cut, Luc DF will stay over Hiebert unless it is felt that Ahmed can provide adequate cover at FB. Even then, I can see the reason why Luc DF would not be mentioned to be flying to Europe with Brym & Zator because if they are sending him to the U20 qualifiers, they aren't being held in Europe

So has Canada fully released the 26 man squad yet for Copa America? Or was that just for the friendlies against France 🇫🇷 and Netherlands 🇳🇱? If that is the case and cuts have been made, then I wonder if they make the final squad announcement tomorrow or on deadline day on the 15th?
