Another thing to consider is that transfer fees apply to the MLS salary cap. But signing a player  from an MLSNP team comes on a free. When MLSNP was announced (with no salary cap), there was lots of speculation that you'd see players get transferred to MLSNP first, then later signed to MLS deals to avoid having the transfer fee on the MLS salary cap.

Say Johnston required a 100k transfer fee and a 75k salary. If he went to MLS straight, that'd be 175k on their cap, but by going to MLSNP, say in July he joins the first team permanently its only 75k on their cap. It's a big loophole that the league allows. (They probably just need to argue that they're not doing it intentionally, which for a player like Johnston you could argue that they want to test him before giving him an MLS deal. Ie you probably couldn't get away with signing Eustaquio via the MLSNP loophole [not saying Staq should come to MLS, just used an example of a player who would clearly not need a 'MLSNP test'])

The last update on this guy was back in December 2022  when he signed with their MLS Next  Pro team . I wonder  how he did he last season with their MLS Pro team?

He did okay.  Nothing spectacular.  There were a few times he had the armband and had a few moments but didn't really separate himself from the pack.

Glad to see he's with the first team.
