Leagues Cup 2023 - New Format

I'm interested in it. Honestly, it's the same with any new tournament: if clubs take it seriously, fans will probably get on board. Last year I heard nothing but moaning from English reporters about the "Europa Conference League" and how "you're better off just getting out of it/not qualifying". But you know what? It was fun, and watching the final between Roma and Feyenoord, you could tell it meant a lot to both the clubs and fans. I sort of think that's what this will be too.

If I read this correctly, the format will provide a lot of teams with a major break during the season (Guaranteed only 2 games).

That appears to be the main downside of the tournament.  (Aside from those who'd prefer it not happen at all.)

Haven't changed my opinion that it feels like a plastic competition intended to suck more dollars out of fans and bring Liga MX and MLS closer together. I strongly dislike it.

As for the tournament format itself, I agree it seems weird. I don't like 3 team groups for starters, and I hate how they are shutting down both leagues to play this tournament. I really hate how games will mostly (completely?) be in MLS venues? I mean, we all know it's just a money-making scheme, but couldn't they at least make it a little less obvious? Everything about it is super lame and super unnecessary.

Now we get to look forward to MLS employees try and convince us how important this tournament is going to be, which will no doubt be cringe worthy stuff. I hope and expect MLS teams to treat this with a low priority relative to the real competitions.

I think for Liga MX this is essentially pre season for their Clausura

Good point. Another reason amongst many why teams aren't going to prioritize or value League Cup.

I will actually feel better about it if they market it for what it is, rather than trying to give it a faux importance, but I don't expect that.

What I can never understand is why we're creating all these terrible money-grab tournaments these days when there is one that could actually benefit world football...the club world cup. An expanded club world cup that actually has importance could be massive worldwide.

Probably because it's a path of more resistance. Much easier to do something like Leagues Cup instead, even though I hate it.

I would love an expanded club world cup though:

  • Host country club champion
  • UEFA Champions League winner
  • UEFA Champions League runner up
  • UEFA Champions League third place (create a game for SF losers)
  • UEFA Europa League winner
  • UEFA Europa League runner up
  • UEFA Conference League winner
  • Copa Libertadores winner
  • Copa Libertadores runner up
  • Copa Sud America winner
  • CONCACAF CL winner
  • CONCACAF CL runner up
  • AFC Champions League winner
  • AFC Champions League runner up
  • CAF Champions League winner
  • OFC winner/CAF Champions League runner up playoff (create a game here)

I'm just not big on the once every 4 years thing because now you have teams that may look nothing like the team that earned the right to participate. It would be cool but its a massive undertaking. I see yours is based on an annual concept but it's tough to find that much time in everyone's calendar

I still believe the best and most realistic idea would to somehow find some connectivity between North and South American club football

Even if you created a top 8 League coefficient and did a knockout in 1 location. Like an old school champions leage with just league champs. or CCL Copa Sud, Copa Libs, host in 1 location. Something like that. Anything seems more legitimate than this League Cup cash grab

Probably because a) an expanded club world cup really only benefits the small clubs.  All the big European clubs have enough lucrative stuff going on at home that they don't need to travel to some other continent to play some obscure little teams.  And b) the small local teams do get to grab the money from this money grab.

Joke tournament. An MLS clubs winning doesn't really mean much when you don't have to worry about playing in Altitude at Azteca or facing the crowd in Monterrey.

Joke tournament that means nothing.

Another example of Americans incapable of sharing shit

The only purpose of this tournament is to extract money from Mexican-American soccer fans.

It's convoluted. And bloated.

I like what Obinna said. It's a plastic event
