The Importance of the Players vs CSA Pay Dispute

Ordering suits with a contracted entity isn't that unusual.

It isn’t if the Directors themselves pay for the clothing. Unless I misunderstood that isn’t what happened here. Zero reason a Company would buy suits for its Board of Directors.

What’s laughable here is some people’s naivety / lack of sophistication which they seem to hold in such high regard.  Top it off with a bit of gas-lighting of  others asking entirely reasonable questions about the CSA’s business practices.

Have you ever questioned why all the board members need to attend the WC in the first place?

Well-run organizations send their board members to these events to make connections. These connections eventually grow into profitable ventures or create desired outcomes for their enterprises.

We are sending a bunch of tourists who think they just won the lotto. They will be coming back with nothing but a few trinkets and if they are lucky, syphilis.

Its funny that you mention naivety, because that was one of the first things that came to mind when reading an article that tries to paint the delegation wearing matching suits as some sort of outrageous controversy when that's what so many delegations do. I've been watching the Italian FA do that for nearly 50 years.

If I had said it was vital for World Cup success that these delegations attend and they all have some crucial function to play that would suggest naivety...but I  never said anything of the kind. The naivety doesn't come from expecting these delegations to play crucial roles (which nobody was doing as far as I can see), but from expecting that there wouldn't be one or that they'd all be dressed like Bruce Springsteen and the E-street band circa 1984. That's the impression that Westhead is giving, and its not the first time he's looked naive in one of his World Cup articles, but I guess that can happen when you suddenly start to cover the sport this year.

Serious question - why is the CSA paying for directors to attend the World Cup (let alone buying them clothes). Not to mention the other idiotic decisions enumerated in the Westhead piece.

This story, if true, is utterly embarrassing and only speaks to the provincialism of the CSA.

I have been a board director of NGO/NPOs with much larger budgets and you would never see excess like this in normal, well governed, responsible, mission focused organizations - this shit just does not happen.

I don't say this lightly, but the CSA is a joke of extreme proportions.

The dollar value makes this not a huge deal but there’s really no reason why the CSA would purchase clothing on behalf of its Board of Directors. That’s very unusual

The Board of Directors and the President are all volunteers, from my understanding. My guess is "CSA makes volunteers spends thousands on purchasing suit to attend World Cup" would also be spun as a controversy if that in fact had happened that way.

Why are you attacking him though? Just because you are a journalist doesn't mean he's taking a shot at you. You don't need to take offense to his comment on behalf of journalists everywhere. Westhead is absolutely stirring the pot, at least when it comes to the bit on the suits.

I didn’t attack him, I attacked his take.

Why are you defending him?

Or just don't get the suit. Best I can see, not a prerequisite for being a board director.

The whole making the players return their swag is weird. I can’t imagine other nations do that but would be good to get confirmation. Sounds like real Mickey Mouse stuff.

I agree it sounds weird.. but I also think there is more to it than just that. CSA can't really address it because then the headline reads CSA responds to them making players return their track suits. It's just all games played by the journalist trying to create pressure points. He's just a hired goon. It's unnecessary and negative. Let them negotiate behind the scenes, it's not our business

If the CSA BoD didn't attend the World Cup....what a bunch of idiots! No wonder we can't get any other country's FA to agree to play us in friendlies!

If the CSA BoD attends the World Cup....who the fuck do these freeloading cunts think they are? It's shit like this why we couldn't pay to send our 3rd-choice goalkeeper's third cousin, twice removed to Qatar!

If the CSA BoD show up at the World Cup in whatever suit they have in their wardrobe at home...look at these amateur hour clowns! No wonder we're considered such a joke in world football circles!

If the CSA BoD show up at the World Cup in very nice, bespoke suits, embroidered with the association badge, and procured for a very reasonable price, considering.......well, you get the idea, I'm sure.

This is all a load of bullshit, isn't it? The story is that the association is still negotiating certain things with the players and some players have taken a harder line than others on image rights. But, some of you are so easy for a dickhead like Westhead to play.

It's usually a prerequisite for the FA delegations though, which is my earlier point.

If we see pictures of the delegation in Qatar and they don't have a uniform look from these purchases at all and it turns out that Brittany Timko is dressed like Herb Tarlick while Charmaine Crooks is dressed like Bailey Quarters, then fair enough.

Do journalist have a journal?

Dear Diary

Today was really frustrating. Nobody seems to want to acknowledge that I'm the smartest person on earth. I took time away from covering the local city council meeting today. Beth wants a speed bump on main street because the teenagers ride their skateboards with no regard. Anyways forget about that.. I single handily was uncovering the greed and corruption and exposing the jogging pants scandal at the CSA when a guy on a soccer forum made fun of journalists. I was offended and to make matters worse some other guy defended this horrible naive idiot. I just might go and cry myself to sleep with a giant bag of cheedos

Make these people go away and why can't everyone think exactly like me!

That may well be true, I am not sure.

The point here - in the CSA context - is that they're crying poor (a function of the business model and their own poor decisions around the CSB) and telling players they cannot meet their financial demands.

That's all fair enough, but then how do you go and spend some of your limited budget on suits, ipads and plane tickets for your directors?  Yes, the quantum is smaller, but leadership does, at times, ask for sacrifice.

What if we only sent as a delegation people who were integral to the team and it's performance?  I would rather have 10 more athletic therapists than 10 directors who will achieve precisely nothing.

Honestly, this is the biggest governance clusterfuck imaginable (rivaling Canada hockey, perhaps)

You know I was just watching the news. I was seeing what's going on in Haiti and I thought to myself  damn there is so much tragedy in the world. And you not what's the worse thing. And i really get emotional just thinking about it... I think Junior Hoilett really needs another free track suit

FIFA is going to be paying the cost of up to 50 staff/officials for this World Cup.

Does CSB really have the rights to the player's image/liveliness? I thought that was out of their deal?

I mean, why is it so hard to get those jerseys to begin with? I'd expect CSB to capitalize big time and sell them like crazy if it was under their deal since that'd make them even more money...no?🤔

Nike deal is with CSA only.

You’re right, I should spend all my time on here mocking the players I ostensibly cheer for and gaslighting anyone who dares question the CSA.

Hey look over there on that table. Some free timbits! You better get over there before Jim from the Village Gazette gets here. You know how he can put them back

Hey look over there. It’s a friend of yours. You better go over there and bully him for wearing a mask so you can later tell the story to a bunch of strangers on the Internet.

Palease. I would never be friends with someone who wears a mask.

I had no idea who you were until now. But it looks like someone keeps score. Interesting

You told that story yourself in here.

I guess it’s hard to keep track with all the shitposting you do, but some of us do actually remember these things.
