The Race for Pot 3

I don't think pot 3/pot 4 will matter much the teams in either pot are sort of the same.

This is some groups we'll get in pot 3 which makes me think it doesn't really matter:

Pot 1 and 2 is what makes things ultimately difficult and the likes of Ecuador, Cameroon and (pontentially) Peru in pot 4 make me nervous.

damn - a few of those are brutal. Imagine having both France and Germany in our group.  The England groups are much more manageable (relatively speaking of course).

Clearly we would be underdogs in all these groups but we do have have a better chance of getting an 'easy' group from Pot 3 than we do in Pot 4. The simulations with us in Pot 4 are generally Group of Death material

honestly none of the teams in pot 4 scare me compared to pot 3 and we have a better chance of getting Qatar in Pot 3. There are three teams in pot 3 that I want to avoid (Morocco, Senegal, Serbia, and even poland) and none in pot 4 Saying that though, I’d rather have a rotation for the last game to boost morale within the team even more and it is in line with Herdman’s “everyone’s part of this team” way of thinking. I believe a rotated squad can get a result

That simulation website gives some funky results.  In one instance it had Mexico in Pot 4 as the intercontinental winner and in another it had the USA losing the inter-continental against New Zealand.  I guess these are mathematically possible but the odds of seeing them in a row?  Or maybe I should run out and buy a lottery ticket right now.

Hi, first time poster, long time lurker. I have full confidence that our team can beat many of the best in pots 1 and 2. If Northern Macedonia can eliminate Italy, then Canada can do the same as well.

I highly doubt we will win the World Cup, but I have no doubt whatsoever that we will advance out of the group stage. After that, anything can happen.

Here's a reason to care.  A win gets us to #30 in the world, lowering the threshold for international appearances required for a UK work permit.  That ranking would be in place heading into the summer transfer window.  Could make the difference for some careers.

Work Permits post-Brexit international appearances

I think a win gets us to #31, 0.01 point behind Nigeria.

Great point, although I still think we'd be #31, Nigeria would be ahead of us by 0.01 pts

Man, Pot 2 is brutal. We can’t play the US or Mexico. I don’t want Netherlands, Germany, Denmark (very underrated), or Switzerland in our group. Leaves only Uruguay, or Croatia for me to be happy with.

Having said that, if you offered me Qatar, but you get one of those 4 good pot 2 teams, I’d take it in a heartbeat.

Who we draw from Pot 2 may be more important than who we draw from Pot 1.  I completely agree with your run down… Denmark seem a cohesive, well coached unit much like us.

To me the only real "advantages" teams like Canada, USA, Mexico would really get is if they draw Qatar as their Pot 1 team..and then a few of the Pot 4 teams could be considered less difficult opponents...and I guess if you get stuck with Peru as your Pot 4 team that wouldn't be a ton of fun....after that the difference is pretty minimal..

This thread seems so surreal.  Last year, we were crapping ourselves about Suriname and the danger they posed.  And now we aren’t even bothered by getting The Netherlands in the World Cup. Talking about extremes.

"we aren’t even bothered by getting The Netherlands"... umm, that matchup would be exciting and all, but I wouldn't exactly see winning that as anything other than a major upset.

For me, I would like to play either Uruguay or the Swiss from pot 2. Uruguay would be fun as it gives our team experience against a south American side which isn’t Argentina or Brazil.

yeah, i agree...those teams, plus Croatia feel more winnable than Denmark, Germany, or the Netherlands.

I agree.  But someone posted earlier that the only team they wanted to avoid in Pot 2 was Germany.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather face Tunisia, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, UAE, and NZ in the group stage than Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Poland, Korea.  There won't be any easy matches, but I think there's a quality bump between pot 3 and pot 4.

Yes, but it's probably gonna be Peru rather than UAE, and we can't draw NZ since that's the CONCACAF/OFC playoff spot. I still agree that being in Pot 3 is probably better, but it's really close.

Hes talking about fifa rankings. Nothing to do with wcq pots.

we’d be in the world cup and ranked 31. Nigeria is not in the world cup and ranked 30

Oh my Bad. But if canada wins tommorow, they will be in pot 3, right?
