Colonel Green
Very different sports, etc., but Project 8 has to take some encouragement from this (as well as the strong initial ticket sales). Canuckia, Ivan and narduch

Colonel Green
On 1/17/2024 at 8:56 PM, red card said: Note they have dropped "City" from their name. This battle has already been lost to some extent, but I wish that US/Canadian soccer leagues weren't so frequently running away from our own sports naming conventions and trying to sound like they're European clubs (especially with words like "United" that have been completely stripped of their original context). Just call them "the Toronto ________" and run with that; "AFC Toronto" vs "Toronto FC" is not distinct enough, and "City" would have been another example of copying the Premier League with no regard for actual local usage. red card
Looks like a private holding company has acquired rights to a team in December. They will announce city and team name in the spring. They're looking to build their own stadium. Hokulani (means heavenly star in Hawaiian) has women football teams in Ukraine, Romania, England & Finland. Most recently in October 2023, shares in the FA Womens National League Club (3rd Tier) - Halifax FC Women were acquired. Their portfolio also includes companies involved in music & media rights. https://pressat.co.uk/releases/hokulani-limited-acquires-the-franchise-rights-to-a-team-in-the-professional-canadian-womens-football-league-65720ae49c912795930fc593fef8e4d5/ Kent, Raven, Canuckia and 3 others

red card
Courtney Sherlock who is a veterinarian with ownership in six hospitals is a co-founder and CEO of the Halifax entry. She has no background in soccer ex for her kids playing it. Sherlock says the Wanderers Field is one option for a venue. The other 2 investors so far are Miriam Zitner and Adam Baggs. Zitner is involved with Carbon to Sea, a non-profit initiative evaluating whether ocean alkalinity enhancement can safely remove and store billions of tons of CO2. Baggs is CEO of Maplewave, a software company. Matheson said the 5th & 6th teams aren't ready yet to announce. She also said there is still a chance for a 7th or 8th team. https://nationalpost.com/pmn/sports-pmn/halifax-the-latest-city-to-sign-up-for-the-project-8-womens-pro-soccer-league Unnamed Trialist and narduch
Unnamed Trialist
I'm impressed, good for them. Going to predict that if the Caps women play at BC Place, they'll outdraw every team in the CPL. Does that sound unreasonable? Hoping that the Halifax team helps get a new stadium in the city. Ivan and narduch

Ozzie_the_parrot
They are going to go to the cities where somebody is willing to sign the cheque in the first instance obviously but is there a pent up demand for a second pro soccer club in Halifax? Think their best bet would be the largest markets with no MLS or CanPL club, which at this point would be Edmonton, Quebec City, K/W, London and possibly a Laval rather than a Montreal club.
