"Canadian-Algerian soccer player Mohamed Farsi, who plays for the Columbus Crew (Ohio) in Major League Soccer (MLS), has changed his sports nationality from Canadian to Algerian.

This is what sources close to the right-back confirmed to RCI."

Does this mean he's lost?

The translation is not very good, but it sounds like they are referring to the one time switch, correct? Would think that means he’s officially lost.

The 1 time switch only actually locks in once he plays for the team he’s switching to. All a moot point though because he clearly doesn’t want to play for us.

But if he’s no longer Canadian, as far as FIFA sees it, would he not have to switch back to us, which couldn’t happen since it’s a one time switch? Would be pretty embarrassing though if you’re correct and the guy files his paperwork and doesn’t get called.

In any case, I think he’s gone for good, if he did change his mind, we’ll have even better options by then. CF Montreal legend JMR will be ahead of him in the depth chart by Christmas 2025 and you can take that to the bank.

You can switch back if the nation you switched to never caps you. We only call it a 'one time switch' colloquially. The actual term is 'change of association'. It only becomes one-way if the receiving nation caps you (in a friendly, even).

Just curious, do you literally have to earn the cap or would making the bench lock you in.

Gutierrez apprently made our bench 6 times without ever being capped. Could he then switch back to Chile?

You have to step foot on the field. Gutierrez could still in theory 'switch back' to Chile.

Note also that if you had 3 nationalities, you can't switch to the third. Only the original. So if Koleosho filed his change of association to Canada and we just never capped him, he could switch back to Italy but could not switch to the USA or Nigeria.

Maybe there is hope for Bustos

With Chile? He wasn't a particularly good CPL player for his final 2 seasons, and his time in Europe have been pretty meh so far

He's pretty far away from a call up to either side, but calling his time in Europe "meh" is a little harsh, imo.

He wasn't always a starter, but he did have a decent contribution for the team that finished 5th in the Allsvensken last season (if I am not mistaken). That won't earn him a call up to either side, but it's something he could build on.

Things have been quiet lately though. Anyone know if he's still playing for them, how he's playing for them, etc.?

Oh it was just a semi-snide remark referencing his dalliance with Chile's youth team and some comments a few years back that he'd been in contact with Chile again, and that Chile's national coach had told him he had skills but needed to prove himself at a higher level. (Paraphrasing.) Not my finest post. :)

Good luck to him. The guy obviously does not want to play for Canada.

We have so many kids coming through that this guy wont be able to get on the B squad if he doesn't commit soon. .

To be honest, he can go and fuck him self as he has already made his feeling obvious.
