Amazing how little ambition is demonstrated by teams with names like, "Barcelona", or "Manchester City". This flies in the face of the evidence and seems to demonstrate a lack of understanding or appreciation for soccer culture. A culture which values local identity and ,as has been repeatedly pointed out, any CanPL team that actually claims to be a, "peer competitor" rather than a, "scrappy lower league team", is doomed. It will be mocked in the media, not taken seriously by what passes for sports journalists in the this country, and will therefore not be covered by the very media which will determine the survival or failure of the club. Blue and White Army
I'm not in favour of clubs that name themselves after a massive area rather than a specific community or traversable region. Try to be everything and you end up being nothing. After all, BC is larger in size than France. GuillermoDelQuarto and ted

Initially, calling themselves "BC" if there's no other CPL team around makes sense business-wise to draw as many fans as possible. I think it's obvious that Vancouver Island would support Victoria even if a BC team exists. However, once there are more BC clubs, (Kelowna, Richmond or Burnaby) they should changed their name to Fraser or Surrey.

Oh come ON! Now you are just taking the piss. You don't just change the name of a team!?!?! That goes against sports culture in general, soccer culture in particular, and is a pretty dumb marketing move. Invest millions in a, "brand" only to throw it away in a couple of years?!?! I doubt anyone investing in a team or thw league wants to hear that sort of nonsense. Kent, GuillermoDelQuarto and Blue and White Army
Ansem
How about keeping BCFC bit just adding Surrey once Victoria and other mainland clubs arrives? Surrey, BCFC isn't that bad Don't get me wrong, I'd rather they just call themselves Surrey but they are competing directly with the Whitecaps. If they feel they need that name to get the rest of the proving behind them initially, can't argue against the logic. Them succeeding is more important than a name. They can always add Surrey once there's more trams in bc Edited December 30, 2017 by Ansem
SpursFlu
I'm having a hard time figuring what this all really matters. If come 2019 there is a professional soccer team playing in a stadium somewhere in Surrey, that would be amazing. Whoever owns the team can call it whatever they want. The only opinion that really matters are the people of Surrey/Fraser Valley. If the name bothers people from elsewhere, good.. now you have the team you love to hate Edited December 30, 2017 by SpursFlu ted and CDNFootballer 1
BringBackTheBlizzard
The would be Saskatchewan team that is leaning towards Saskatoon rather than Regina at the moment seemed to want to be the franchise for the entire province in some of the early newspaper articles, so can understand why a BC branding would raise alarm bells in Victoria in a league that has at times been pitched as a soccer version of the CFL. Given Paul Beirne has also talked about Kelowna w/ Penticton as a potential market it all seems a bit overblown, however, especially when the more obvious concern at the moment should be why the league hasn't been able to have a six team post-World Cup soft launch despite FCE's recent departure from the NASL. If the business plan is seen as unsustainable in Edmonton, is it likely to ever fly in Victoria? Arguments over franchise names between multiple pro level soccer teams in BC would be a nice problem to have down the road, but seem a bit pie in the sky at the moment. SpursFlu
Not putting this here to reinforce any previous opinions on stadium site but noticed something the other day and found an article on line that confirmed. A 3 ice sheet community facility was confirmed to be built at Cloverdale fairgrounds. Last summer the area was cleared and it was confirmed that construction was underway. I noticed they had completely stopped doing any work at that site while another similar facility in Bridgeview with same timelines was much further ahead. The city did confirm the Cloverdale facility is now on hold saying the contractor costs had got too high. I call bs. Im thinking its on hold because fairgrounds is likely where the city wants the soccer stadium and a new master plan for the fairgrounds would have to be drafted if the CPL agrees I know that' a lot of speculation but that is very strange that a project like that would just suddenly stop dead in its tracks and the city has confirmed they will be making a decision/suggestion in January where to put this stadium Edited January 4, 2018 by SpursFlu CDNFootballer and Rheo

SpursFlu
That is the one. A little late in the game of a very high profile, much needed project to claim the numbers don't add up. I don' think it's one or the other, I think the city would like to re purpose the Stetson bowl next to that site. Building of both would definitely need to take the other in to account when designed and built
BringBackTheBlizzard
Looks like a viable candidate for a retrofitted pro soccer stadium at relatively low expense. Only obvious issue would be that it's probably not that good from a transit standpoint?
SpursFlu
People in the Valley are not very transit dependent. I also believe that the fairgrounds will be a temp solution with some aspects being pop up but leaving a much needed 5-7 K stadium legacy for the community. I bet the city is eyeing a much larger stadium in City Centre with the Lions but probably 5 years out. Also keep in mind that Surrey United's clubhouse and facility is currently being renovated which is right next to Cloverdale fairgrounds. City of Surrey put in on that. Professional soccer teams need somewhere to practice and it' not really used mon-friday daytime Edited January 5, 2018 by SpursFlu BringBackTheBlizzard

Uh huh. You're comparing Surrey to Toronto? and most of those clubs have no competition except the Argos... so the context is completely different. I don't agree with the strategy, but understand the logic behind it. They are most likely thinking that since the Whitecaps are mainly a "Vancouver draw" and fighting for fans on their turf initially might be very costly and unsuccessful, might as well go after the rest of the province. Playing friendlies and holding public practices all over BC with the name "BC" except in Vancouver and Victoria makes marketing sense. A Quebec City team will do the same as in French, we don't say "City". They will be call "Quebec" and go after the whole province outside of Montreal Island positioning themselves as the province's team. Again, right thing to do. Surrey however will be in the Caps territory (I think it was mentioned somewhere that the Caps considered Manitoba to BC as their backyard). ThiKu
Cloverdale would be a disaster. No one from Vancouver would attend - how many would drive from there? Few, at best. xman14

Is Vancouver (City) the top target or Surrey + the rest of the valley? More people live in Surrey (517k) + the surrounding cities than Vancouver (City @ 631k). I'm sure there will be people from Vancouver still checking it out though
youllneverwalkalone
If it were a pop up to be replaced by a bigger stadium in downtown Whalley, it would be similar to early MLS with the Caps. If that's the only way to get the league going I'll take it.
