After seeing Cyle Larin and Jonathan David miss penalties in the last while, I did a quick search as to how some of our regulars have done.  I got stats from transfermarkt.us for penalties taken during regular play  - I'm not sure the last time we've been involved in a shoot out to decide a knock-out game.

Name / Taken / Scored / Missed

David 10 / 7 / 3 (1 for 1 with Canada)

Hoilett 9 / 5 / 4 (3 for 4 with Canada)

Larin 5 / 2 / 3 (both successful ones were with Canada, all 3 misses with club)

Davies 2 / 2 / 0 (both Canada)

Vitoria 15 / 13 / 2  (was 9 for 9 in 2012/13)

Ugbo  6 / 6 / 0

Osorio 1 / 0 / 1

Cavallini 11 / 7 / 4 (1 for 2 for Canada)

Millar 2 / 2 / 0

Hutchinson 2 / 2 / 0 (1 for 1 for Canada)

As you see, not very spectacular overall.  The big positive news, however, is that as a National team we've scored 8 in a row (Davies, Hoilett, Larin, David) - Cavallini was the last to miss in the 2019 Gold Cup v Jamaica.

The success rate for Canada may have something to do with the quality of the opposing keepers in Concacaf.  Club stats may be more relevant for WC

Looks like ugbo should be the taker if he’s on the pitch

I can’t even imagine the stress around this site, at the game and Canadian supporters watching the games and we’re down a goal or tied late or something along those lines and we get a penalty kick. That 2 minutes between the call and kick will be the worst no matter who they choose

MAK missed one last year against the Cayman Islands. His followup attempt on the rebound was also stopped before Davies buried it.

Osorio is 0 for 3 in PK shootouts, while Borjan is 1 for 1 as a taker

I had in mind he was 1 for 3 in shootouts for TFC. I'll see if I can dig up the info.

He missed in the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League final.

He missed in the 2022 Voyageurs Cup final.

He missed in the 2019 Voyageurs Cup final. (I am starting to believe that you are right).

OK. You are right! And his most recent miss was even after the curse of Issey Nakajima Farran against TFC was lifted.

  • 2 weeks later...

With 4 or 5 games left to go, we have broken last year's record of total minutes played by Canadians in MLS. Last years total was 45200 and after last weeks games this season in at 45795. I will post the individual teams totals at the end of the season, but Montreal and Toronto will certainly set single season highs. Vancouver should get close to last years totals.

Fun conversation because I can't focus with Thursday Night Football in four hours...

who's the player in the pool that you have a sweet spot for? not necessarily the best player but the guy(s) that you root for the most and love to watch succeed.

For me, I think it's the little French Bulldog Samuel Piette. I appreciate that through many years of criticism (and then finally heroism) he's always shown up for the squad and played his role in triumphs and heartbreaks.

Distant second is probably Shaffelburg, just love seeing a Maritime player making moves and Doneil since I think he's often been dealt a tough hand by the NT.

Miller has been one of my favorites since his first year in Orlando, his personal story is touching and seems like such a great guy.

Osorio and Laryea are crazy high on my list.  How can anyone not love what they bring?

I'll be following Kone closely as well as cheering for him, I feel his ceiling is ridiculously high.  Seems mature beyond his years in interviews, so calm and composed with the ball at his feet for his age.  The kid is still growing too, I feel he'll be a tank that can run in the midfield, key word is dominant.

I always have one or two of these.  It started back with Adrian Serioux and Josh Simpson when they went to Millwall.  I  used to stream radio broadcasts of those games and still remember the first time Serioux took a throw in and it led straight to a goal against Leicester (I think?).  The announcers were gobsmacked.  It was great.  It went as far as joining a Millwall message board until I realized exactly what some of those fans were all about.  Promptly left but still have a Josh Simpson signed Millwall jersey somewhere in my closet.

Right now it's Jayden Nelson.  I'm glad he's playing for TFC because I shudder to think what costs I would have to incur to stream his games if (when?) he goes to Europe.

Kone is another one.  I'm pissed that most CFM games are streamed solely on TVA a lot otherwise I'd happily watch more of him.  Pretty sure tonight's game is on TSN.

- Liam Millar, he had an excellent first season with Basel, he's one of our few guys who has been able to consistently put in goals, I think he has an extra gear that can elevate him to an even better league at his prime.

- Kone because I love the story of him being a purely Montreal born & raised player who looks like he has the potential to really go all the way. His ascent has been lightning fast, and as someone who thinks that Montreal and Quebec in general would reap amazing rewards with a better focus on talent cultivation, I see him as the inspiration that gets more kids involved, and that gets the powers that be start investing more in growing the sport in the province.

- Alistair Johnston purely for the reason that he does not look like a guy who is a professional athlete- he's a cross between a nerdy gym teacher and an IT guy, but he's so good. He reminds me of those typical 3rd line hockey players- the 5'8 players from Quebec who would drop the mitts with a 6'4 goon, run through glass for the team, and as a guy who was born on the west coast and lived in Montreal and Toronto, he represents our country's three best soccer markets which is a cool story too.

For a deeper cut, I really wanna see Aribim Pepple succeed. From the CPL to getting signed by a Championship team, I think him succeeding goes a long way to proving concept for the CPL, and helps put domestic Canadian soccer on the map. To a slightly lesser extent, any of the other CPL guys who have moved to Europe this year as well.

Laryea for sure. Love everything he brings to a game.

I was thinking last night, though... Would I start him against Belgium? Probably not.

Still love the guy.

Kone is my #2 as well. I'd pair him up with Eustaquio in one of the friendlies and see what happens. He'll be eager to improve on his WCQ performance.

This is hard. I love all of these guys. But I will go with..

Kennedy - He's had a somewhat unique climb up the professional ladder in the era of MLS academies, which is cool. So many Albertans get funneled into the Whitecaps system, but he went straight to Europe and started at the bottom, basically. Now he's entering his 3rd straight season in the 2. Bundesliga. Great accomplishment. He's also a Calgarian and his Dad posts here and gives us some insights into Scott, so he's a fun player to follow and cheer for.

Tabla - This one is a bit weird, because I have been very critical of him over the years, but that was because I still believe in his potential, even with him dropping down to the CPL with Ottawa. It's either that, or I just haven't let go of the fact he was suppose to be a generational player for Canada. Regardless, I am still cheering for him harder than some others. If he can even just reach half of his potential he'll find his way back onto the national team.

Nelson - I am a sucker for skilled, inventive, technical attackers. Similar to Tabla, Jayden Nelson seemed to be "the next guy" when he was starring for our U17s in the World Cup. Now that he's playing in midfield, a position we could use depth in, I am cheering for him even more, plus he looks like a young JDG out there in the center with that Afro. Bonus points for that!

.....I'll stop there, lest I go through ever player in the pool and find reasons to have a "soft-spot" for them.

Player I root for?  I hope Waterman gets called into the squad this September because he is a late bloomer who has worked his way up in unheralded fashion (neither a hyped up Canadian MLS academy prospect or first round NCAA draft pick).  I don't think he was ever part of the Whitecaps academy system and (please correct me if I am wrong) didn't play in an elite pay-to-play academy.   A CIS/USports/CPL grad, he has become a key supporting piece of a top MLS side.  Miller and Johnston get the accolades on here but Waterman's game has had the most growth.

Also, like me, he's a BC guy!

My second pick is Kaye because he went from TFC academy cast off and "why is Zambrano picking this guy?" to a player who worked his way up via USL into having a strong MLS career and, when on form, is a really good playmaker with a talent for that incisive killer pass.  Has had poor moments at international and club level, no argument there, but seems to take more flak for those than others with similar poor play.  Finally, he's a player willing to be assertive on social issues: that's not everybody's cup of tea but it means something to me.

Has to be Laryea. I love being on the other side of the shenanigans when we play Central American teams. They are so frustrating and it is great giving them some of their own medicine. Also as a guy that has been discarded by multiple teams to a National team star is incredible.

Also, if this was a couple years ago, every single person would say Davies. To go from being born in a refugee camp to a Champions League winner and world IX is insane.
