BringBackTheBlizzard
Sounds like he was playing one city off against the other, but Saskatoon now has the inside track: http://thestarphoenix.com/sports/local-sports/groups-pro-soccer-push-includes-downtown-stadium-for-saskatoon ...He estimates it would take nine to 10 months to build the new stadium, and he envisions playing games at Prairieland in 2019 and 2020 before moving into a new facility in 2021, he said...Belan is also talking with Regina about putting the team there. One of his ideas was to use a large portion of the old Taylor Field, including the west grandstand. That would have saved him money in stadium construction, and the city money in demolition. The proposal didn’t pan out...“Back in July, when we were still evaluating both cities, it was really a coin toss,” Belan added. “At this point, the differentiating factor is that we’re close to a commercial agreement on Prairieland. We think that’s a suitable facility to introduce the project...We’re getting to a point where we need to start making some commitments, financially and otherwise, for being in the league in 2019. We think Prairieland, assuming we can come to a final agreement with them, would give us a viable venue to start in 2019.” ... I know a bunch of people who either used to work at them or presently still do. The search for an interim location makes sense as acquisition of suitable land downtown (identified by Belan at the Regina meet & greet as part of the plan) in time for 2019 was always going to be problematic in Saskatoon. BradMack
Can anyone with some Saskatoon knowledge give us who have never been an idea of how good both the temporary location mentioned, and the permanent downtown location are? Is the city yards location an ideal spot?
Dub Narcotic
North Downtown - better for atmosphere, pre/post activities and transit access. Would require a reasonable chunk of change from the city to re-locate the city operations (and remediate the land) and relative lack of parking and slightly dicey reputation would be issues in a city where the suburban vote is very powerful. https://www.google.ca/maps/place/52°08'04.1"N+106°39'50.8"W/@52.1344793,-106.6662977,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!1m6!3m5!1s0x5304f6d0e6f71673:0xa68159be40b2b36!2sSaskatoon+Police+Service!8m2!3d52.134206!4d-106.666738!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d52.134476!4d-106.6641094 Praireland - Saskatoon's version of Exhibition Place or PNE. Lots and lots of parking and highway access, transit is not good but not terrible, fairly central. Close to one or two things for pre/post but not ideal. Wouldn't need any city money but conflicts with the Praireland activities in the summer. https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Prairieland+Park+Grandstand/@52.0983869,-106.6756053,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x5bd007d581998aae!8m2!3d52.0983869!4d-106.6756053 Rheo, johnyb and BradMack
