Think that's only partial. Not sure what happens when you announce your long roster for Champions, including some youth players, I don't think it can be touched until the end of the group stage. And not sure how preliminary rounds affect things.

Players aren't Cup tied anymore when they switch teams.

Teams still need to make a Euro roster list for Competitions. In January they are allowed to make 3 changes.

Not sure how it works for the Qualifying rounds vs. when the Competition proper starts

You have to submit a list for each round

"List A must be submitted online by the following deadlines:

4 July 2024 (24:00 CET) for all matches in the first qualifying round;

18 July 2024 (24:00 CET) for all matches in the second qualifying round;

1 August 2024 (24:00 CET) for all matches in the third qualifying round;

15 August 2024 (24:00 CET) for all matches in the play-offs;

3 September 2024 (24:00 CET) for all matches from the first match in the league phase up to and including the final.

For the qualifying phase and the play-offs, a club may register a maximum of two new eligible players on List A after the above-mentioned deadlines"

And (as you say)

"After the completion of the league phase and before the start of the knockout phase, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registrations must be completed by 6 February 2025 (24:00 CET) at the latest."

No longer any club restrictions other than the general - "Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season. During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for
two clubs."

So he could play qualifying rounds, if registered successively, for Mälmo, then be registered by another club if signed in time for the group stage, say Brest or PSV. Clear enough.

While most players in a summer league like MLS or Scandinavia have a full winter break, and then could be expected back from international duty immediately (as is the case with many MLS guys), perhaps they've just given him an extra few days or a week to re-set. Mälmo are 7 points ahead of 2nd place with a game more, and the 30-match league half played.

If Football Manager has taught me anything it's that teams have an entry list for qualifiers and group stage and that can be reset in the new year for knockouts. No clue if that's what happens in reality but it wouldn't surprise me if it were some variation of this.

FWIW, livescore.com lists injured/absent players for many matches and it indicated Cornelius as "international duty".

I'm guessing it's rest.  They don't need their A lineup to get through this round. (They will in the next one.)

How do you figure?

In Europe of some sort barring a real collapse.

They rebuild regularly and have finished outside the top 10 twice in the last 20 years.  And 1 of those was 11th.

They don't have Mason Greenwood. And didn't have Dmitri Payet.

Ajax are still in trouble financially.

Mercato OM: Who is Derek Cornelius? The opinion of two specialists…
footballclubdemarseille-fr July 26 2024

Marseille leaders are about to complete the arrival of defender Derek Cornelius, Canadian international. Who is this player playing in Sweden? Answer with two specialists!

OM's 5th recruit could be named Derek Cornelius. In this article, you will find more information on this Canadian international, including the opinion of a specialist in Nordic football and that of football on the American continent.

First of all, the Nordisk Football account drew up a complete portrait of the player via his X account on Cornelius, who has been playing in Malmö since February 2023. A player who has established himself in the Swedish championship and who has quite a few qualities: “His vision of the game is interesting. Able to anticipate the movements of opposing attackers, he is rarely overtaken and well placed to intervene, which makes him a player very inclined to intercept balls. His physique is one of his main qualities. Fast and powerful, he comes out very quickly on opposing players to catch them off guard, which makes him one of the best Allsvenskan players in one-on-one situations. His aerial game is also excellent. He very often imposes himself thanks to his physique and has an interesting relaxation.

However, Cornelius has flaws, as Nordisk Football points out. “His aggression towards the ball carrier sometimes harms him. The Canadian is therefore a player who is likely to make more mistakes, even if he has the intelligence to make them at opportune moments so as not to put his team in danger. His physique necessarily creates a certain lack of agility, making him not very versatile in a single action. His defensive actions are therefore sometimes a little annihilated against very technical players. Not really comfortable with the long game, he is a player who will prefer to multiply short passes rather than overthrow or find his teammates in depth. It's not necessarily a weakness, but it can become one since it sometimes slows down the game."   The player could arrive as a backup to the left central defender position.

Rough, Cornélius a good understudy to Brassier?

FC Marseille also contacted our comrade Pierre Gerbeaud who follows football on the American continent for the opposing media Lucarne . He gives us his opinion on a player he saw play during the last Copa America, with Canada . “Cornelius made the Copa America with Canada, starting with Bombito, who was announced in Lyon. He's a left center, he made his comeback because he was a little off the radar. I saw him four and a half matches during this competition. For me he is not a starter ahead of Brassier at OM. He is rather rough, he took two or three yellows during the competition, rather aggressive on the ball carrier. Canada is a team that plays lower than what De Zerbi's OM will do. He tended to clear the ball, as a liner it's perfect. He has a reading of the game that holds up. He's a defender who can do the job, he can help out in Merlin's place himself. He reads the game well, he is not slow."

Not a day goes by on the OM side without new transfer information and rumors . According to information from RMC Sport, the Marseille leaders are on the verge of completing a new arrival. “Marseille almost agrees with Canadian international Derek Cornelius . The central defender wants to play in Marseille. Brest and Lille are also interested. Ongoing discussions between OM and Malmö. The Swedes are demanding around €3.5M” reveals journalist Fabrice Hawkins on his Twitter account.

The name of the Canadian central defender had not filtered until today. The latter played 46 matches with Malmö last season and scored 6 goals. He also has 18 caps with Canada.

The Marseille club has already signed 4 recruits since the start of the transfer window: Ismaël Koné, Lilian Brassier, Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Olympian leaders should not stop there: Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah and Argentine playmaker Valentin Carboni are also in advanced discussions with OM.

Fair- if David stays at Lille which is looking likelier, assuming they don’t lose many more players, and can replace Yoro with Cornelius, they are going to challenge for a champions league spot. Maybe a run at the title depending on how lucky they get and how well PSG replaces Mbappe.

Big fan of the OM acquisitions this deadline though. Hojbjerg, Kone, I think they’re getting some of their loan players back, they’ll be a very good team this season. Truly a shame about Greenwood- he’s unfortunately probably going to have a very good season. Silver lining with JD staying is that he can probably snag a golden boot off of him though.

(Payet played 71 games for Lille, I believe)

OM is arguably the sexiest link yet, moreso than Ajax even, but how much would he play?

Anyone know what the CB depth is like at the club?

@Olympique_de_Marseille?

According to my very sophisticated research (looking at wiki and sofifa for EAFC ratings), Lilian Brassier is the only other left footed CB. They recently signed him on loan with option to buy from Brest. He played 30 matches in Ligue 1 for Brest so he will be good competition for Derek for sure. They play 5 at the back, so he could theoretically fill in at LCB or CB if he doesn't win a starting spot. I don't think it would be too far-fetched for him to start though.

Must say that analysis reposted by @Joe MacCarthy is quite good.

I have been to Marseille many times, was there at New Year's again after more than 20 years, for half a day, have never seen a match however. But I was right by the stadium, the Velodrome, and the renovation for it is really spectacular, even though it has a very odd style of seating arrangements, precisely that wavy bowl.

For me it is a bit far to go for a match. Marseille really lives and breathes football, I think it is one of the few cities in France that is fully committed to the sport, where the fanbase is broad and runs across the social fabric, with no interference of rugby or anything else.

Any updates on a Cornelius transfer?

I was reading an article that he was close to personal terms with Marseille. The fee would be 3.5M Euros and would need to be agreed on, but with how Marseille is splashing the cash I can't see that being a stumbling block.

This was from 3 days ago and also mentions Lille and Brest, but says Marseille is the most advanced to sign him.

So, nothing new, but it really sounds like things have progressed...
