FIFA rankings - why they are important and how to beat the system

The FIFA website says the next rankings update is tomorrow.

Nice to see we're moving up and getting closer to 1500. Imagine if we'd had the full points from 2 regulation wins in the Venezuela match and the Uruguay match.

Holding on for those last two minutes against Uruguay would have put us at 32.

So  if we did hold on for another 2 mins and got the win would we really be 8 spots better as a team than we are now? And conversely are we 8 spots worse as a team because we let Uruguay tie the game with 2 mins left? It's somewhat similar to what some say for players...is Bair now a better player because he got a transfer to Ligue 1?  The points differential between a win and tie is too large if it results in a move from 40 to 32 imo. There's no differential for points if a team has a 0-1 loss or a 0-4 loss etc etc. Sorry just venting.

I mean, maybe? Being able to finish games like that vs not being able to really does seperate different levels of teams. I know people love to hate on the ranking system, but when you are trying to rank over 200 teams that play a handful of games per year, it's not going to be perfect.

Yup, it's exactly those little details and focus that makes the difference between a 32nd place team and 40th.  We'll learn and be better for it.

To be fair, it was 15 minutes.

There wasn't really a point where we were saying "let's hold on to win" that wasn't immediately after the David goal.

To @Kadenge a lot of us understand that venting, but I think it is the case: holding on and getting third is worth at least 8 points. There are World Cups won or lost on a goal or a penalty kick. It seems fair to me, and especially in a sport where a goal means a lot.

Did anyone watch what happened afterwards? Uruguay celebrated, they received third place medals, they posed thrilled with their medals. We missed all that by not holding on or winning in regular time or penalties. A medal in Copa America and tying the best result in Copa by an invited team--seems 8 spots in Fifa ranking is about right.

CONCACAF teams were a net negative earner in the COPA, they lost more ranking points collectively than they earned, about -25.  So once CONCACAF returns to swapping points amongst themselves?  Well, they'll be worse off, on average.

CONMEBOL managed to secure +130 points!  The gap gets bigger...

How does this compare to Centenario? In that Copa Haiti, Jamaica, and Panama were blasted into orbit, Mexico lost 7-0 to Chile in the QF, and the US lost 4-0 to Argentina in the SF.

In 2015, neither Jamaica nor Mexico won a match.

In 2011, Mexico were swept by Uruguay, Chile, and Peru.

2024 seems decent by comparison. Every Concacaf team won at least a match except for Jamaica, with the caveat that Mexico's only win was over Jamaica.

Hah!  You are right...so 2024 was maybe relatively good for CONCACAF fortunes vs. CONMEBOL!  2016 was not that bad a showing, at least by ranking points if not scores...maybe...so perhaps CONCACAF is trending better/more competitive?  Someone who has lived and died by Copa results as it relates to CONCACAF over this time can maybe chime in...

Interesting to recall that 2019 invitees Japan and Qatar also had a very tough go.  No victories, some draws but no advancement.

Looking at the COPA history in more detail makes me think that Canada might be reviled if they are ever invited again.  CONMEBOL is used to crushing their non-federation opponents, or at least leaving them with little satisfaction.  Once again making this Canada run all the more impressive, and who knows...maybe they are on a definite upward trajectory?

Very interesting.

I think with FIFA rankings the top dogs seem to have inflated rankings and my assumption was always that it's from being a big fish in a small pond.

Your observation with the COPA results for CONCACAF and the lost points seem to support that.

This makes sense and why FIFA needs more inter Confed competitions to more accurately reflect rankings, especially for relatively weaker Confederations.

Unfortunately we can't compare the ranking changes for 2016 vs 2024, since in 2016 it was under the old FIFA ranking system.

Moved up a measly 2 spots (6 points) for beating the 16th ranked team away from home.

The ranking math is truly farcical. We could beat the US 10 games in a row and still have fewer ranking points.

Warning, there was a million popups.  And some of the ads may make you blush.  NSFW.
