Had a dream last night I was hanging out with Sam Piette in Montreal. There was a CanMNT camp there (already unrealistic, right?) and we were just chillin talking about soccer....his pro experience...my amateur experience (as if he'd give a shit lol).... and then he mentions that he has training soon....so I was like shit man i'll give you a ride. He was like cool...but just one second...then he then goes out to the balcony and takes a HUGE pull on this massive blunt! Couldn't believe it my eyes!....but it was just the one pull. Then right after the looks at me...squinting.... and says "ready to go". Just as I go downstairs to grab my keys... my sister asks me for a ride (to soccer)....what a bum I thought...this is Sam Piette we are talking about....you'll have to wait I told her. However, by the time we finished arguing Piette had already left. I was so pissed I didn't get to help him out...and spend more time with him. Weirdly though I went back to the balcony, which was now overlooking the field (dreams are weird) and I saw him rushing to put on his gear at the touchline...just as everyone else was jogging toward the opposite touchline and off the field...gathering in some kind of huddle. Couldn't help but wonder how tight a ship Herdman runs and if Piette was gonna be in shit for being late. Didn't even cross my mind (in my dream) whether John would be pissed that he was high lol Thank god Piette and his short shorts didn't feature. blueseeka
This guy doesn't get enough love on here. Watching the Montreal game and his workrate is just great. Never tired and always in the right spot. He is not flashy at all but such a constant. Wish he would untuck his shorts. I know we have a shortage of top midfielders but I am glad he is always solid. Game is free on AppleTV today Ivan, narduch, Fresh Prince of MTL and 3 others

ahmedou
Sam loves Canada. Always been there for Canada Soccer since 2012. A leader on the field and outside the field. An important veteran. Helping the youth, etc. 0 mins in World Cup 2022 and 0 mins in Copa America 2024. And still here for Canada Soccer. InglewoodJack
Love Piette. Hopefully he becomes a coach for Canada after his playing days, unless we wake up as a province and elect him as our premier, which is the job he should have. rkomar
Perhaps Piette's role was to play as a holding midfielder when we have a lead. Sucks for him if true because that was a very rare situation in the last two major tournaments. johnyb

Great guy, happy for his contributions, but it's a long walk to the sunset time for him, at least in a Canada shirt. He is really the guy I'm most anxious for us to replace soon. Could it be they just don't make em like they used to, that hardnosed bulldog of a ballwinner? Merci, Sam! ahmedou and jhoops__

But honestly compared to Sam, they need to be bigger and/or faster. Edson Alvarez is a similar player just with a few more physical tools. We had an honest chance of getting a result during that one, and any chance you get to avoid exiting a tournament on 0 points you take it. The issue is that Piette is too slow. We can wax poetic about how he’s a defensive bulldog and all of that, but what happens when you field him in stoppage time against Uruguay and he’s 15 feet behind the play when they even it up? Not saying I necessarily wouldn’t have him out there, but he is a prime candidate to get really exposed against better opposition in ways that make the coach look extremely bad. I think people may be getting too hung up on our need for a true defensive midfielder (ie a mid with zero offensive acumen), but I don’t think it was our midfield breaking down that lost us that game. Going to a back 5 with Miller on, bringing Eustaquio on instead of Theo Bair or Liam Millar, those moves would’ve been moves that would’ve been more affective. Piette is a legend and in MLS he is a strong player who is important for Montreal, but the limitations that kept him here all these years are the same limitations that keep him out of these games. P-O
I love Piette & Impact fan here. He is a captain and is a very limited contributor in a #6 role which we don't use in the national team. We don't have a destroyer & he cannot play. Corazon, jhoops__ and johnyb
Kadenge
I was at BMO field when Piette made his first senior cap for Canada as a teen. He certainly contributed for the Nats back then. His biggest & best performance was in the 2-0 NL win over the USA in Toronto. Since then his mins have declined. Not being subbed in late vs Uruguay with a 2-1 lead says it all. I doubt we see him for Canada going forward. With Saliba's emergence for CFM it will be interesting to see if Sam wins his starting spot back. jhoops__

Stryker911
He was not able to come on while we were up against Uruguay as we had already made all 5 of our subs. I appreciate that the last two subs we brought on while tied were offensive. Nice to see that Marsch wanted to win it in regulation. costarg
Lots of great points here. Bottom line, I feel, comes down to Herdman being a McKinsey type and likes his Myers-Briggs assessments and tests. If you didn't fit in, you had no way back in. We knew who was in and who was out. No one got a second chance, Piette was in that group. Piette was no slower than Hutch at the WC and we needed a DM out there to help out in the midfield, yet it was never gonna happen. With Marsch, Piette just doesn't fit the system, he doesn't use a DM and Piette is too slow for how he likes the team to play. I understand Marsch's reasoning, Herdman, not so much.
