Doubt he could play as a #10 at a higher level as he isn't able to pass the ball effectively enough with both feet and is a bit lightweight physically. There are going to be standouts at CanPL level that have flaws in their game that make it difficult for them to get a bigger contract elsewhere in a close but no cigar sort of way. I generally agree that this was the Bustos who did little originally at Whitecaps. Now I am not so sure he hasn't taken that physical step up. If you look at the last goal the other day, he made a play in the midfield, turning, laid it off. Then got it back and attacked the space, then passed to the other side wing, then kept going into the box where he received a perfect pass for his left foot. Some of his goals have been stabbing hammers as well, into tight corners of the goal. If you can do that with half a step you may be ready for MLS. I'd say he's set for another try, but if not, maybe in the first division of a European 7-14 ranked league, say Denmark, or Austria. If Gloire Amanda can be in top flight Austria, as a weaker less technical version but in fact a bit similar to Bustos, I think Marco could as well. My point was mainly that MLS teams already know all about players like Bustos, Becker and Didic, so although they stand out at CanPL level there's likely to be a reason they are not viewed as ready for prime time in that context. If he does get another shot it would probably be to provide an option for naturally left-sided attacking midfielder type roles in certain formations like 4-2-3-1 rather than as the main #10 on a roster, in my opinion. narduch
Its been pretty well documented that MLS is a weird anomaly in world soccer the relies the least on its domestic lower divisions to scout for talent. Whatever the reason is (lack of promotion/relegation, access to cheap talent out of college, a salary cap that favours blowing money on foreign players, etc) I don't think you can be so flippant an just say a player like Bustos doesn't deserve a shot. Ozzie_the_parrot
By way of a fact check at no point have I stated in this thread that Bustos doesn't deserve a shot. Literally two posts up I describe the roster role I think he is most likely to fill if he gets one. SthMelbRed
I'm glad that Bustos is doing really well at Pacific. I really wish that Robinson had seen fit to use him in his proper position when he was breaking through with the 'Caps. He should have been serving as Morales' apprentice. However, Robbo only saw a smaller, attacking player and automatically thought, 'he's a winger.' That being said, I'm not in favour of the 'Caps bringing him back in purely on the basis that Kam Habibullah plays a similar game, but has way more upside. I'd rather Bustos get a shot somewhere else and Kam gets the minutes in Vancouver. Dominic94, HochelagaFC, NVsoccer and 1 other

It's funny how every thread on this board that refers to the Whitecaps ends up basically concluding they should play with nobody on the field, for the sake of Canadian soccer. Watchmen
It's only going to be one game, but it might be interesting to see how Bustos does against the Whitecaps in the Voyageurs Cup. Opportunity for him to play against a team from a higher league (albeit a poor team from that league). Aird25
No goals last night, but he drew the penalty on the first, setup the second, and hit the post with a great shot on the third leaving Diaz with the rebound. Another strong showing but I still think he needs to prove it against Forge and Cavalry, and the Whitecaps will be a big opportunity for him as well sebdeserio

Aird25
Great interview with KJ and Marco. He talks a fair bit about his fitness and mentality with the Whitecaps when he was younger, compared to where he is now. Also talks about his Mexico stint and time in USL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkEQI1Ih0_g Bertuzzi44 and narduch

SpecialK
Until he moves on to a better league/bigger club, he shouldn’t be anywhere near the A or B national team squad. I love how he’s finding his game and raising the standard of the CPL but I just want to pump the breaks. Edited July 31, 2021 by SpecialK
Ozzie_the_parrot
Don't think playing in CanPL should necessarily disqualify him. Being based in a CONCACAF timezone is a bonus in some ways and other reasonably strong CONCACAF nations don't appear to be reticent about doing it. The main issue is that he's not in one of the positions where there is a chronic shortage of quality in depth in selection terms at the moment in an is there really nobody better than Frank Sturing sort of way. Hates me to say it but as of right now he’s not making that Gold Cup team. Frank Strungs doesn’t even have a club, he shouldnt be there either. Canada’s depth has changed a lot in a matter of a year! This is the whole Borges debate all over again. The CPL is great, its helping Canadian Soccer players. The level is growing but it’s not there yet. Club Linesman
No it’s not but having our own professional league gives young Canadians minutes and an opportunity to play soccer to see if things work out. We have dozens more young men getting a chance and as the league starts to improve with higher salaries and better players it’s only a matter of time before the CPL produces players who deserve to be in the pool. Many of the teams we have lost to in the past have squads made up of domestic players with a few internationals sprinkled in. We will be much better off with having our own league and I would bet that by 2026 the CPL will have at least one player who got their start in our league, if not more. toontownman, Addona, SpecialK and 1 other
toontownman
Pacific vs Whitecaps should be fun. Bustos deserves a step up to the MLS or otherwise again to test him. It's egregious the Whitecaps didn't take him back this year as a low risk, low cost backup #10. He certainly would have got a ton of minutes this year imo. He is a different class to Raposo if he plays wide too. Bustos is not alone like that. He is at the front of the CPL queue though imo.

Bustos just doesn’t have the breakaway speed to be an effective winger at a higher level. Let’s put it this way.. he’s probably just as skilled as Buchanan and more skilled than Pasher. Those two have big time wheels though. Case in point Buchanan’s goal against Mexico - Bustos wouldn’t have had the speed to create that chance. Never mind the physicality that Buchanan brings in open play and his defensive chops. Different level. There’s two roles he can be at a higher level: a deep lying playmaker or a 10. For the former he has to improve his defence/tenacity and the latter is an incredibly tough role for any player to excel at that demands exceptional talent. Rarely do we see North American players fill such a role. I want him to make it big but he’s limited in terms of roles he can play. shorty
Yeah but that game also featured Aird, Fisk, Tissot, Trafford and Corbin-Ong. I love Bustos and hope for the best for him, and I like all the previous guys as well for their heart and service, but Canada123’s points are good ones. Marco had one or two breaks last night that Buchanan would have taken straight to goal but he had to pull up short because he was caught for pace by Escalante or another Cavalry defender. And if his path forward is as a 10, he isn’t getting any practice at it in PFC’s current setup.
One American
MLS basically doesn't play domestic attacking midfielders/wingers. That's why the USMNT is down to Jonathan Lewis. It's not a disgrace to not make it in MLS at that position. It would be hard to get the chance. Are you telling me not to post updates on his season, because that’s quite literally all I did. Why in the world are we comparing him to Buchanan. They’re very different players. Pacific’s whole formation this season is designed around Bustos dropping inside and Chung and Dixon providing width. Tactically it’s actually quite interesting to watch a CM and RM almost switch in possession Edited July 31, 2021 by Aird25
