Guest Ed
Training camps under way as most Canucks in Germany are back already or jetting out this weekend. Rob Friend has rejoined Borussia Moenchengladbach from his holiday visiting his wife's parents stateside. The team departed for Malaga today for a week of training. An exhibition game against Energie Cottbus is up next on Tuesday, January 5th and they also play Borussia Dortmund later in the week. Lars Hirschfeld and Adam Straith are with Cottbus and they fly out tomorrow. In addition to the 'Gladbach game, they also face RC Lens on Jan 7th and Borussia Dortmund on Jan 9th. Both remained back in Germany over the break. Kevin McKenna and FC Koeln were back at it early, training again on the 29th December. With New Year's Eve and New Year's day off, they are off to Turkey next Monday to Friday, taking on TuS Koblenz in an exhibition match. Nik Ledgerwood was back in Lethbridge for the break but probably en route to Frankfurt today as they are back training as well.

Guest Ed
Some pics from training today: Lars with Cottbus in Spain: Looks like Nik Ledgerwood went back last week as he took part in an indoor tourney today with his FSV Frankfurt side. "Für den FSV Frankfurt spielten beim Licher Hessen Cup 2010: Klandt (Ersatztorwart Alvarez) – Husterer, Ledgerwood, Mehic, Theodosiadis, Kujabi, Pintol, Lagerblom, Bouhaddouz, Gallego, Schneider, Göbig, Orahovac. Toronto MB
In a way, you have to give it to Lars for being one of the genuine personalities of our program, I mean... The guy came out of the woodwork under Holger and put together one of the best games any of our keepers has ever played against the US in the GC 2001 Semi-Final. He then goes wandering around Scandinavia, highlighting his time there by back-stopping the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge that brought an end to 'The Special One's' time at Chelsea... Not to mention his attempt to cut off his own finger with a chesse slicer... He then moves to Romania, of all places, where we basically have no idea what happened other than the fact that he hardly played a minute. Next...the move to Cottbus..where he is sure to be the number 1...but alas.... And somewhere along the way he buys drinks for the Voyageurs in Edmonton. Canada's most talented keeper? No. A bit of a legend? Yes.
Cheeta
You forgot to mention the year or so he was dabbling in the occult and manufacturing Kasey Keller voodoo dolls. No small feat that, the voodoo dolls I mean. Even if he is your room mate you know how hard it is to get a Kasey Keller hair sample?
Guest Ed
Lars doesn't see action after all as Borussia Moenchengladbach lose 1-0 to Energie Cottbus in Spain, with Tremmel in net. Guest Ed
Stalteri had to leave the 'Gladbach camp in Spain as he suffered a knee injury. Press reports today say that he is happy to find out it is just a strain and not a worse injury. Friend did not feature in today's 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund as coach Frontzeck gave some other players a run out.
Guest Ed
Energie Cottbus win again, 6-1 vs a 3rd division leading Spanish side (UD Marbella), Adam Straith playing the 2nd half. Lars was injured earlier in the week which kept him out of starting the game vs 'Gladbach on Tuesday and also out of this match. Kevin McKenna goes 90 as a central defender for FC Koeln today in a 1-0 loss to FC Nurnberg in Turkey.

Guest Ed
Thanks for that Frank. For those who can't read German, the story says that some may be surprised that McKenna extended, given that there were rumours he was looking for a transfer last summer and over the winter break, but McKenna says that the manager has shown confidence in him, playing him in various positions, and that on a personal note, his wife is expecting their third child and they are quite happy in Koeln. Kevin married the daughter of a German national cyclist (might have been from DDR days) from Cottbus.
Havoc88
I hope he keeps getting in the squad, it seems like he's been in and out of the line up all season. Ed - do you have any word on Stalteri at 'Gladbach? He got some time early in the season but looks to be completely shut out of the side. There may or may not be a correlation between how bad they started though and who was in the line-up!
Guest Ed
All season Paul has been having fitness issues. Paul also had to leave the training camp to go back to get his latest knee problem diagnosed (see a post a few above). A week or so ago there was an article on 'Gladbach's defense, talking about how the back four of Levels, Brouwers, Dante and Jaurès appeared in 15 of the 17 fall season games. It's tougher to break into the lineup when they are doing well.

Guest Ed
Rob Friend plays the first game and is subbed out in the 2nd game as Borussia Moenchengladbach win the Winter Cup tournament in Dusseldorf, beating VfL Wolfsburg 3-2 in the semis, and host Fortuna Dusseldorf 1-0 in the final in a mini-game (45 min) format.
