Rwanda hosted the CAF U20 qualifiers in January. They were in a group with Ghana, Cameroon and Mali. They defeated Mali 2-1, Drew Cameroon 1-1 and lost to Ghana 0-2. Ghana and Cameroon both advanced from the group won in their respective semi's to face off against each other in the finals - which Ghana won. Judging from those results i'd say Rwanda have a pretty decent team.

Game Report Canada vs. Rwanda

http://www.canadasoccer.com/tourney/FIFA_U20WC/game_profile.asp?gameId=1764

Canada's men's U-20 team lost its opening match at the 2009 Francophone Games in Beirut, Lebanon today. Canada fell behind early, but came on strong in the end in the 2:3 loss to Rwanda. It was Canada's first of two group games in the opening round of the Francophone Games Soccer Tournament.

"A poor first half did us in as our final push came up short," said head coach Tony Fonseca. "It was a lesson to the players that team shape and concentration are vital for the entire 90 minutes."

Rwanda scored the opening goal in the 21st minute. Canada's opponent cut in sharp from the wing and hammered a shot into the top corner. Ten minutes later, Canada was forced to make its first change after Goran Vlaski was injured. Canada still managed to keep Rwanda to just one goal through 45 minutes.

In the second half, Rwanda took a 2-0 lead when a Canadian pass to the goalkeeper went into the net. The mistake was made in the 50th minute. Fifteen minutes later, Rwanda took a 3-0 lead on a well-placed shot into the Canadian net.

In the last 20 minutes, Canada took over and started to move in on the Rwanda goal. On a great counter attack, Milos Scepanovic provided a terrific through ball into the box. Alex Semenets won the ball, beat a defender and put it into the net.

Then in the dying moments, Alex Surprenant produced a terrific corner kick that Semenets headed for his second goal of the game.

Canada will now prepare for a must-win contest against group opponent Cameroon. Canada's second and last match of the group stage is this 30 September at Stade Rafic Hariri in Saïda.

thanks starbucks22 for the great site info. Under sports Canada and grants I saw that they gave the CSA in 07/ 2008 almost 3.4 million dollars. Thats alot of money! Wonder where it all goes? Wonder what they gave this year? They gave 111 million dollars to all the sports for developement which isnt to bad> I didnt realize they gave so much

For 2007-08 the CSA received about twice its annual Sport Canada grant. This is most likely due to the FIFA U20 hosted in Canada that year. Sport Canada recently released its funding figures for "summer" sports for the 2009-10 fiscal year. The CSA will receive $1,830,000.

See the chart at the bottom of the linked page:

^^ Alex, that means Sport Canada gave only 3% of its allocation to Canada's fastest growing sport and that includes the U20 tournament. Soccer is severely underfunded, and relative to other G20 nations (eg. Australia), what we get is paltry. Out of $1.8 million, how much would the MNT get? And how about the future coach's salary? No wonder it's tough to get a top foreign coach.

(Sorry for the thread-jack boys.)
