Guest Ed
Preview of this coming weekend's games from a Canuck perspective: Friday No Canucks in action. Saturday Bundesliga 1 Daniel Imhof starts as the holding midfielder for VfL Bochum once again as they are away to VfL Wolfsburg. Their solid 2-0 win over Karlsruhe SC last Sunday put them out of relegation territory. Another strong showing by Dani Fernandes could give them some breathing room from the relegation pack. Kevin McKenna moves from central defender to right full back as FC Koeln are away vs Eintracht Frankfurt. Koeln remain in 11th from their draw last weekend. And Paul Stalteri at right back and Rob Friend as target man up front lead Borussia Moenchengladbach at home against league leaders TSG Hoffenheim. Hoffenheim opened their new stadium last weekend with a solid 2-0 win over Energie Cottbus. Might be a great time for 'Gladbach to get 3 points and get off the bottom of the table. You would have to think the wheels are going to come off the Hoffenheim bus sooner than later, losing the top Bundesliga goal scorer for the season while on winter break. Unfortunately no GOL TV coverage of the above 3 games on Saturday. Sunday Bundesliga 2 David Hoilett on the bench for FC St Pauli (according to Kicker) as they host 2nd place SpVgg Greuther Fuerth. A win at home will help K'town immensely. Nik Ledgerwood reported by kicker to be on the bench again (although he was not dressed last week) as 1860 Muenchen are away to FSV Mainz 05. And finally, no lineups yet for Monday's tilt for K'town vs 'Der Club' (FC Nuernburg). Hopefully Josh Simpson will see some time. The 3rd league starts this weekend, but looks like Riley O'Neil is playing with Eintracht Braunschweig's U23's. The A-Junioren Bundesliga (U19's) are back in action next weekend and a week later the Regional Leagues start again.
Guest Ed
Not looking good for K-town today. Despite the points taken off Mainz by 1860 yesterday, they fail to make a move as they are down 2-0 and down to 10 men at the half vs FC Nuernburg. Josh Simpson nailed to the bench as we are 7 minutes into 2nd half.
Guest Ed
Much better game from Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday as they lost the win with a minute left (Hoffenheim scores on a header in an off-side position). Stalteri told the press that they unfortunately lost two points on Saturday but the one point they did manage could prove to be very important. Could be true. How many teams will take points off Hoffenheim in the second half? Up next weekend, Paul's old club Werder Bremen (slumping badly) host 'Gladbach. Good work from Nik Ledgerwood yesterday playing on the right flank as he set up the tying goal in a 2-2 draw with 3rd place FSV Mainz 05 shortly after coming on the field at the hour mark. David Hoilett came on as a second half sub with his FC St Pauli team already down 2-0 at home to Greuther Fuerth as they went on to lose their first home match of the season 3-0. And it turns out that Kevin McKenna did not start for FC Koeln, as his team came back twice to earn a 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.
SouthAfricaOrBust
should be a great experience for Paul, something of a bonus for being back in Germany eh?
frank
It was better for Josh not to see any action. What an embarrassing performance yesterday. The trend goes more and more downwards. All of them it looks like Josh should rename, perhaps in Simpskovic, then he would have better chances to play under coach Sasic. I´ve never seen a coach like him, lining up only for sympathies
trueviking
was just watching the extended highlights of the BM/hoff match...stalteri was certainly playing a more forward role than right back....he had a couple golden opportunities...one, friend tapped it back to him in the box, he turned and sailed it over the bar....decent shot, but he should have scored...another, stalteri couldnt bring it under control with an open net....on both plays he was the most forward player on the pitch....a win would have been valuable. friend needs to start scoring again...he hasnt had one in a long while...BM need him to put the ball in the net if they have any chance of staying up. Yes, my mistake there. I should have clarified that he is not playing in the back line now. Here is the formation used on last Saturday, with Stalteri at right mid in a 3-3-1-3 formation. http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/bundesliga/spieltag/taktischeaufstellung/object/863584/liga/1/saison/2008-09/spieltag/19/naviindex/5 Remember the the opposition was Hoffenheim, runaway leaders of the first half. 'Gladbach played much better on Saturday and once they get past the tough opening few matches, should start climbing in points again.

Is 1 good, or is 5 good?
Guest Ed
6 is the absolute bottom, 1 is the top. Kicker are usually pretty stingy with their marks so you will see max a couple of players per week get a '1'. The highest ranked player in the league, to date, is Ibisevic from Hoffenheim and his overall average rating from 17 games is only 2.53.
Grizzly
A 3 for Stalteri is pretty good by Kicker's standards (Ed is right that they are hard markers). That was the third highest mark on the team and no one on Hoffenheim got a higher mark than 3. Friend's 4 in Kicker terms means he was neither good nor poor. Guest Ed
Weekend action involving Canucks: FRIDAY Bundesliga 2 David Hoilett on the bench as FC St Pauli visit RW Oberhausen. David was featured in the Hamburger Abendblatt today, a short piece on his twice-weekly German lessons, endured with a hot chocolate and croissants: http://www.abendblatt.de/daten/2009/02/11/1044245.html SATURDAY Bundesliga 1 Daniel Imhof and Dani Fernandes both start for VfL Bochum (17th on 14 pts) as they host Schalke 04 (8th on 30 pts). Kevin Mckenna on the bench as FC Koeln (11th on 24 pts) host Karlsruher SC (16th on 16 pts). A win here would help both Bochum and Moenchengladbach. For Borussia Moenchengladbach (18th on 12 pts), Rob Friend sits out one match (accumulated 5 yellow cards) and Paul Stalteri starts against his old squad Werder Bremen (10th on 26 pts). SUNDAY Bundesliga 2 Nik Ledgerwood on the bench as 1860 Muenchen (11th on 23 pts) host RW Ahlen (10th on 27 pts). This match is a true six pointer for 1860. Finally, Josh Simspon on the bench as FC Kaiserslautern (4th on 32 pts) look to reverse their terrible showing from last Monday as they host FC Ingolstadt (12th on 22 pts). Guest Ed
Just discovered that Riley O'Neill is out with an Achilles problem, as the 3 Liga starts up again this weekend, his club Eintracht Braunschweig hosting Kickers Emden. Eddie Sidra and Adam Straith both went 90 minutes in the back line for Energie Cottbus' U23's (with Eddie Sidra setting up a goal) in their last exhibition match on Tuesday, a 3-2 loss against Oberliga side Torgelower SV Greif. The Regional League North does not get under way until next weekend. Jonathan Bourgault played an exhibition match on Monday with his Regional League North SV Wilhelmshaven side, a 2-0 loss to Schalke 04's amateurs. Might see Kyle Porter with Energie Cottbus U19's as they resume this weekend, taking on Hertha Berlin in the A-Junioren Bundesliga on Sunday. Straith might get some time, playing down. Jaineil Hoilett's FC St Pauli U17's get back in action next weekend in the B-Junioren Bundesliga.
Guest Ed
Scoring 2 goals in the first 10 minutes, RW Oberhausen storm out to a 2-0 lead over FC St Pauli. Likely to see David Jr come off the bench in the 2nd half. Update: David stays on the bench as RW Oberhausen goes up 3-0 before the half. A late goal at the end of each half by FC St Pauli leaves the final score line looking closer than the game itself 3-2.
loyola
Werder Bremen 1-1 Borussia M'Gladbach Stalteri played the whole game. Friend was suspended. USA Michael Bradley is having an excellent week, he scored BM lone goal. Bochum 2-1 Schalke 04 Imhoff goes the distance at left back (???) according to skysports. trueviking
two draws off top 4 sides for BM...they are still at the bottom looking way up, but hopefully this good form translates into points with lesser competition.
frank
Josh is fighting for a new contract with the FCK http://forum.fck.de/wbb/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=8205 saying the Josh payed back the support from the fans with his goal 9 minutes after his substitution. It was his 12th in 50 games for the Red Devils. It´s not fun, if you don´t play he says, he always gave everything, but during the winter break FCK signed Danny Fuchs on his position. Also Paljic is able to play on the left wing. So he needed to play the role as "Joker". But he showed his qualities, speed and the willing to score. Hopefully the responsible people read this and extract the contract soon. That´s what Josh wants and the fans too.
Guest Ed
Adam Straith and Eddie Sidra start in the back line for Energie Cottbus amateurs in a regional Cup competition on Saturday. Straith goes the full 90 in a 3-0 win for Cottbus. The Cottbus U19 game vs Hertha Berlin has been pushed back till March.
Guest Ed
Weekend preview: Friday - no B1 or B2 games involving Canucks Saturday Bundesliga 1 Borussia Moenchengladbach, dead last on 13 points, host Hannover 96. Somewhat unusual to see 4 North Americans start a Bundesliga match, Stalteri at right mid, Bradley centre mid and Friend target man up front for 'Gladbach vs Cherundolo at right back for Hannover 96. Two Canucks starting as Dani Fernandes and Daniel Imhof of VfL Bochum (15th on 17 pts) travel to take on Arminia Bielefeld, a winnable game that would increase their margin of safety. Tough test for Kevin McKenna as he comes in for the suspended (accumulation of cautions) Geromel to bolster FC Koeln's backline as they face Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena. (slight TAPE DELAY on Gol TV Canada - 9:30 AM MST/8:30 AM PST/11:30 AM EST) Sunday Nik Ledgerwood to start once again for 1860 Munchen as they are away to MSV Duisburg. Monday No lineups yet but hopefully Josh Simpson's goal coming on as a sub last week will give him a start as FC Kaiserslautern travel north to face David Hoilett and FC St Pauli. Guest Ed
Huge wins for both FC Koeln and Borussia Moenchengladbach today in the Bundesliga. McKenna, struggling with an ankle injury all week, guts out 90 minutes in central defense, including an ill-timed lunge by Klose which forces him out for treatment early in the 2nd half. Koeln storm out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and hold Bayern to a single goal in the 2nd half for a big win in Muenchen. 'Gladbach are now undefeated in 3 games as they get a much needed home win 3-2 over Hannover 96. Friend goes 90 and assists on the winning goal by Neuville. Daniel Imhof and Dani Fernandes only manage a 1-1 draw with Bielefeld.
