Yes I was, with the Spouse, kids, sister and her kids. I was going to wander down to the Southsider's area at halftime and look you up (the spouse wasn't too eager for "atmosphere" or potential rainfall so we sat under cover), but the various kidlets "needed" munchies, souveniers (sorry guys, I broke down and bought four "ferners" for the brats, but only one of them could figure out how to make them work), tickets on an autographed soccer ball etc. I think I paid the rent on the Stadium at that game through food, jerseys, scarves and "ferners".

Well it's good for us that you didn't show up at the southside. That was sure some rotten performance by the southsiders, we'd have just looked bad.

Yeah, we weren't too far away (south end of the covered grandstand) and I did notice that your guys weren't on top of your game so to speak. But then again, the game was also lackluster, and I imagine that it is hard to get the game face on when the eastern teams come for a visit. Given your earlier posts about the general unhappiness expressed to you by others at the game about the coach and tactics, I can understand the subdued enthusiasm.

Jeffrey, now that he's called De Serpa, will you lay off the "Yallop is anti-Portugese" shtick? :)

C'mon Gianluca, how do you think Yallop even knew he existed? It is a completely out of the blue call-up, you have to admit. Any chance someone in the CSA reads reports on him here? No, impossible, that has never happened. They've been keeping track of 2nd tier Portuguese teams on their own accord.

The schtick as you call it was only half-serious and a way to provoke the nice, sweet, clean cut but hard core CSA ball-lickers amongst you. It was a lousy theory but maybe it had some effect. Since we don't have a serious soccer press in Canada at least the Voyaguers board can be a good site for bitchin' and cranky complaining. But don't worry, I'll invent another pseudo-discrimination public outrage campaign for something else equally irritating soon. 'kay?

Jeffrey:

For your next campaign, can you take up the obvious discrimination against Saskatchewan as exemplified by the lack of international games, especially World Cup Qualifying? Has Saskatchewan every hosted an international game? None that I can recall. What other Province can make that claim? Perhaps PEI, but PEI don't count!. Even NB will be hosting a U-17 qualifying tournament. But Saskatchewan? Nooooooooooo. We have not one, but two of Canada's largest soccer stadiums. Yet, no games. It doesn't take a genious to to see the pattern here. The discrimnation is blatant, and really must end. The reason? I think we know that. While the British-centric CSA can recognize their brethren throughout the rest of Canada, Saskatchewan is a province of Ukrainians and other slavic races.

Have at 'er Jeffrey!

Thought that was an odd name for Tony Menezes team, it must be a translation. He is at Zhejiang Lvcheng in Div One, 2nd tier. They are in upper mid table after 17 matches. He scored in two consecutive games for them in May for two wins, and once in June, also a win. Three goals this year.

For info go to sinosoc.com and click on Div One, then results. I think those references to his goals were round 9 and 10, in May, then another into June. Called Tony Menezes or just Tony, his name in Brazil as well.

More info on where this is here, it is on the south coast, south of Shanghai. A little Chinese province with 44 million inhabitants.

A lot of things contributed to Southsiders being off. Number one was certain southsiders not showing up. Secondly Footy and I were waiting for our tickets to arrive outside the stadium and arrived a few minutes after kickoff and thus were slightly off our game. I remember being told after reaching the southside to "hurry up ang get some beer down you it's too quiet in here. Unfortunately I did that too quickly and went from sober to too drunk to care pretty fast. The biggest contributor to the off game by the southsiders was those damn Lynx winning the coin toss and electing to attack towards the southside during the first half. That always screws up the rhythm as we usually warm up during the first half, and everybody is full of beer and ready to give the opposition keeper hell during the second half. Also when the opposition keeper is in the south end during the second half, the southside fills up to overflow. When they win the toss and the keeper is in the north end for the second half theres no pint in joining the southside.

Then as you say there has been discontent with the teams performance and the way they run the team now. I do recall at the lynx game the old Whitecaps Supporters club president show up for his first game this year, in regular clothes (he used to wear his full Whitecaps regalia) and he mentioned he no longer cares, but wanted to drop by and see how we were doing. He'd been a Caps fan since the old NASL days, it took a long time for the organization to kill his spirit.

Leave Kappos in Greece!!

PAOK, Olympiakos and Panathniakos have been training for days. AEK doesn’t have a coach, but I think they just started camp today. AEK's in financial trouble once again and a slew of AEK defenders appear set to leave depending on how things play out. It’s in Kapppos‘s best interest to be there and try to earn a spot and appear loyal.

If AEK is relagated to the "C" division Kappos is expected to stay with the team. Unfortunately Georgeas (Kappos’s competition at right D) is also willing to stay regardless of what scenario takes place.

There will be a lot of holes to fill in AEK’s D. Kasapis and Kostenoglou, two veteran defenders, appear fed up with the instability and are leaving irregardless of what happens to the team. If AEK stays in the “A” division and have enough money they maybe able to hold on to key defenders such Amponsah and Kapsis—but it’s a long shot.

A few surprisng omissions mentioned, like Xausa who has been out of the fold for a while, and Nash etc. I am also surprised that Aristodemo didnt get a look either. Nice to see Mauro Biello get in there. Yallop said he was going to have a look at some new faces and that is exactly what he is doing. A pretty good roster for this camp and good to see Menezes finnaly back in there too.

According to the Impact site, Gervais and Sutton will mist the Millwall match. So that leave only one keeper for that game and confirm Zagar will earn he's first cap.

FOUR PLAYERS JOIN NATIONAL TEAM

Defenders Gabriel Gervais and Nevio Pizzolitto, offensive midfielder Mauro Biello and goalkeeper Greg Sutton will join the Canadian national team, Saturday, in time for international matches to be played in Vancouver, Monday and Wednesday. The national squad will face Scottish team Hearts and English club Millwall.

Gervais and Sutton will be back with the Impact on Tuesday, in time for Wednesday’s home game against the Syracuse Salty Dogs. Pizzolitto and Biello will rejoin their teammates on Thursday, in time for next Friday’s match-up against the Salty Dogs, in Syracuse.

Great roster! Will be cool to seem them play Hearts. I may go to the Millwall game as well just to have a second look at some of the new faces. Considering the respectable list of guys not here, we could realistically put togther a "C team, don't you think? I would go as far as saying that our C team could themselves compete in the A League and beat up on most of the CONCACAF minnows. Man, do we have a lot of depth at the moment or what? A MNT fan's dream-come-true.

Canadian soccer coach calls up 17 for development camp in Vancouver

posted July 8 @ 20:57, EST

VANCOUVER (CP) - Canadian soccer coach Frank Yallop has called up veteran defender Tony Menezes and 16 other players for a development camp in Vancouver.

The intent is to broaden the talent pool for the World Cup team. The camp starts Friday in Vancouver and the players will tackle Scotland's Hearts on Monday and FA Cup finalist Millwall, an English First Division side, next Wednesday. Both games are at Swangard Stadium in suburban Burnaby.

"There are a number of players who have impressed me recently or that have shown they deserve to get a closer look," Yallop said in a statement Thursday

"This camp and these high quality games will provide them with the perfect opportunity to show what they can do and if they are ready to play for the senior team. It also gives me another look at some players who have already earned some senior caps."

That includes Menezes, who has already won 27 caps for the senior team but has been out of the picture recently while playing in China.

Veteran midfielder-forward Mauro Biello of the Montreal Impact also gets an invitation to camp. The 31-year-old has four caps for the World Cap side, the last won in 2000.

At the other end of the spectrum, Yallop has called in 17-year-old Jamie Peters, who plays in Germany in the Kaiserlautern youth system, and midfielder Josh Simpson, one of Canada's stars at the last world under-20 championships.

Players from Canadian A-League teams are goalkeeper Greg Sutton, defenders Gabe Gervais and Nevio Pizzolitto and Biello (Montreal Impact); goalkeeper Theo Zagar, defender Tyler Hughes and defender-midfielder Adrien Serioux (Toronto Lynx); midfielder Mesut Mert (Calgary Mustangs); forward Chris Lemire (Edmonton Aviators) and midfielder Alfredo Valente (Vancouver Whitecaps).

Timotas, would you be able to describe what Jamie Peters looks like? I'm trying to figure out if he's the un-identified player I saw with David Edgar at the Belize matches in Kingston.

Yea Gian-Luca, I think his parents might be Jamaician, so he's coloured, about 5 foot 6, very stocky boy, with his hair normally in braids of some sort.

I've also played against players such as Julian Uccello, Andrea Lombardo, and many others who played with me or against in the Ontario Youth Soccer League for the past few years.

Just the type of roster that was needed by Yallop to explore a few more options.

Tough to draw any conclusions on where players sit in terms of depth. There could have been many players that Yallop wanted to see, but was unable to secure due to club committments.

I'm surprised Lars wasn't called. He must be training with a club somewhere or I'm sure Yallop would have given him some valuable playing time.

Was Kapos of AEK contacted ? This one is tough to call.

Might be him in action (#4 in red) here from a game in May when his 1. FC Kaiserslautern U19s took on 1860 Muenchen U19s. That's Nik Ledgerwood heading the ball away.

Everyone knows agrarian socialism and soccer are incompatible.

Seriously though: what kind of direct flights are there from Europe to Saskatchewan, just curious. Could be a minor factor.

Also: get on the phone or write to the SSA and ask them to make an initiative. A tournament like the last World u-19 women would have done well with another venue in Saskatchewan.

Oh, and PEI does indeed count, and very much. So would the Yukon. Both lovely places. As is Sask, though I have never been to the Toon; oddly enough I know of a small but active Catalan colony there, actually had a neighbour here in Barcelona who was married to a guy from there (banjo playing drunkard must be said).

Silly me for thinking that maybe the CSA were already aware of him since he played for Canada at the Francophone Games (as stated in the CSA press release).

As for David's question about Bartolomeu, I think he has been very impressive for the Lynx this year and we missed him badly on the field last night. Incidentally he was sitting right next to us in the stands (I mean literally right next to us) with an injured foot which nixed any chance of a call-up (which I didn't know about prior to the match). Certainly I (and I bet every other Ultra) would have had him pegged for a call-up before Tyler Hughes, no offense Tyler.

Bloody hell, that was him! That was the player with David Edgar at the 2nd Canada-Belize match. Uncanny guess on my part. Must have used my Voyageurs intiution on that one. To think we could have serenaded him along with Edgar if we had only known......

Yallop was chatting with Peters (they had obviously met previously) after the match and Peters introduced him to David Edgar, whom he hadn't met before.

If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem: Bloody anglo-centric CSA toady.

Seriously, the only real venue is Gordie Howe Bowl. It was scheduled to host a couple of games between CWNT and China, but the level of conspiracy is such that they faked a SARS epidemic in both TO and China just so they could have an excuse to cancel the game. The City of Saskatoon is not really interested. I've made a pitch or two to both my Councillor and the City's rec department. None were interested :(

Oddly enough, the neighbours of our best friends in Saskatoon fit the (gender) scenario you outline. She is from Barcelona and He from Saskatoon. They spend six months in each Community (clever people, they choose Barca in the winter). He is a sculptor of some local renown, and apparently teaches a bit when he is in Spain. I don't know if he plays the Banjo, and have never seen him drunk.
