  • New men's manager expected to be named Friday

The CSA has a St. Patrick's Day surprise for us.

Today, Canadian Soccer announced that it was holding a press conference at Toronto's Westin Harbour Castle at 10 am on Amateur Day. The posh hotel is where the CSA usually holds its really important announcements. I met Sepp Blatter there once.

Initially this press release got the heart fluttering a little, as it was thought that maybe, just maybe, the Premier League announcement was finally upon us. However, a closer look relieved that it was labeled as a men's national team announcement, rather than an IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE FUTURE OF CANADIAN SOCCER!!1!1!

A little asking around allowed me to safely conclude that Friday's surprise is very likely confirmation on who the manager of the national team will be for the Gold Cup. One source suggested to me that the announcement could be a short term band-aid for just the Gold Cup, rather than a long-term contract. However, most people seem to think the CSA has found their man.

    As for who that is...?

Hats off to the CSA on this one. For once they've kept a pretty tight lid on things. We knew about Benito Floro's appointment about a week out, but so far there is pretty consistent silence on this. One person told me that it was likely that we've not heard of the appointee. They said that he probably won't be Canadian and he might be younger than typical. That would represent the CSA looking for a "Herdman-type" to take over the men's team with a long-term vision and a desire to move to Canada and settle here long-term.

One well known Canadian soccer observer, Anthony Totera, reported today that the manager would be coming from Ecuador.

The reality of the CSA's financial situation is that hiring someone that is a bit unknown, but hungry, is likely the smart thing to do. We simply can't afford a name, and a name is unlikely to come to a country that is five years away, at minimum, to a World Cup.

    Someone like, say, Bob Bradley.

It's been suggested to me that the CSA did, at least, reach out to Bradley and there is an obvious connection to Toronto in that his adorable grandkids (and intense son) live here. That connection has allowed this long shot of a rumour to live despite very strong evidence that he's likely to end up in LA, if he decides to give up on Europe at all, that is.

As much as Bradley might make sense for Canada, Canada doesn't really make sense for him. And, by the time it might his grandkids probably won't live here anymore.

If any specific names emerge we will update with a new story.

    • First noticed during the Panama match and then on CPL Outcome matches but officially announced today is the hatching of an eggciting partnership with Burnbrae Farms. You may have noticed their sponsorship of CPL Eggstra Time on OneSoccer. They will be helping in CPL player visits to youth clubs & Eat Like a Pro contests. And expect product sampling such as possibly via bite-size omelletes or scotch eggs at a CPL match next year. So, already in the top 3 for most engaged with CPL/Canada Soccer. It has been at least a year since the last sponsorship announcement, continues trend of most sponsors opting for both CPL & Canada Soccer (including Cdn Championship) and first under Blue (but no Canada Soccer announcement yet). It also fills another segment of the chicken sponsorship food chain - now need a chicken restaurant.  There are also some on social media who regularly attack Burnbrae for caging hens.
    • CBC reporting on Calgary Wild https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/calgary-wild-fc-management-hires-northern-super-league-1.7360671 "Wild FC is expected to announce its first player signing and a "celebrity investor" on Friday"
    • CBC give CanPL some coverage https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/cpl-york-united-pacific-fc-1.736165 (make sure you click the link, more views the article gets the more likely CBC is to give the league more coverage)
    • I prefer two legs because it gives both teams home games.   That’s my biggest problem with the CPL’s playoff format - a team could win the Cup without their fans ever getting a home game.
    • The boys break down the goal.com ranking the top 7 players in the region.  I must say I agree with most of their criticism of the article.  I'll also say this (hopefully it doesn't give anything away): The narrative that Davies has fallen off, regressed, etc....I really think it's gone too far.......his season under Tuchel was his worst yet....but he was still playing a lot for Bayern....one of the best clubs in the world....and although they (shockingly) failed to win anything last term....they played in a UCL semi final....and Davies scored a screamer off the bench....doesn't do much to change the narrative....then he's played at LB for country....which he captains btw....which make it to the semi final of Copa btw....and somehow his performance is seen as a let down.....just because folks can't wrap their head around Davies not being the focal point of Canada's attack.....Davies had a quiet Copa America going forward....but a strong Copa America in the back....and he was a left back. maybe Davies is a victim of his success.. Last comment (this one is a spoiler)....but I just don't see it with Jedi.....maybe I need to watch more Fulham...good player....but no longer the overrated player of the past if you look at how people are talking about him in the present.
    • updated MLS salary guide numbers (as of september) are out. whitecaps are 12th in salary spending ($17.4m), stuart armstrong is on $2.8m https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5870076/2024/10/24/lionel-messi-mls-salary-guide-top-earners/
    • No. Your question was about how to convince people to pay money for something of a lesser quality. That's a fair question if we're asking how to get West Ham and Villa fans to pay to watch Grasshopper vs Lodz - but nobody considering for removing more middling English, German, et. clubs is asking or expecting that. That loss is a given. Fans of those clubs ranked 3-7 in the top five leagues definitely financially important to the Euro competitions - as a block - because they bring a reliable mass of big stadiums and deep pockets, year in year out. They wouldn't be there otherwise (just like they didn't used to be there in previous iterations years past when it was a tighter shop. They're not giving clubs like ours an in for the good of competition!) As for the Conference League, don't get me wrong I woulda enjoyed the win, but it felt iffy the whole way through. (Heck even the Champions League this year - it's a blast, though a fleeting one I'm sure - but I don't blame some of these big clubs for thinking "I have to play the fourth best team in England last year?") But you don't have to feel that way. I'm never going to knock tribalism or irrationality - they are what make sports and fandom so fun. Glad you enjoyed it!
    • What? So club play & Copa doesn't count? Did GC fall into the 23/24 cutoff?
    • On a side note, went to the Vancouver FC away watch party the team put on for the last game of the season vs Ottawa at the Par 4 bar in Surrey, my thoughts : Driving to the event in the heavy rainstorm last Saturday, by roads that were closed because of flooding, was thinking not many may attend but was happily surprised to see about a full house in the section the team had. Lots of TV's with the game on, lots of wings and pizza, and a couple of free drinks for each person. Prize's during half time and players on the roster that didn't make the trip were there as well. Was a good time despite not winning and had never heard of that bar but would recommend it, food, drink, and atmosphere was good. If your a golfer they have a simulator there with a huge floor to ceiling screen which was pretty cool and hence the bars name.
