  • Long live the Nations League!

    Duane Rollins

The controversy in Ottawa this week is distracting Canadian soccer fans from what will mark John Herdman’s competitive debut as manager of the men’s national team. That’s maybe for the best, as the first game is hardly a page turner. The US Virgin Islands haven’t played a game since 2016 and have been outscored 14-0 in the last two games they played.

USVI has won five games in its history, three of which have come against the British Virgin Islands in what I do hope is called the Virgin Derby.

They do not have a single professional on the roster. The highest level any of the players are at would be either Marshall University or the NPSL’s Dallas City.

This is arguably the weakest team Canada has ever faced in its history. It’s no hyperbole to suggest that you could field a stronger side by taking to top players from Toronto’s TSSL. Hell, you might not even need to take the top ones.

The weakness of the match-up is likely why John Herdman is lukewarm about the CONCACAF Nations League. It’s hard to see what Canada gains from playing this game. And, this is not time for the peanut gallery to chime in about how you can’t take anything for granted and any team can upset another, etc. That’s not actually true. The gap is that large. The only question will be how big the victory is.

However, it would be wrong to dismiss the Nations League’s importance based on this game. Even if Canada somehow completely bottles this classification period they still won’t be anywhere close to playing these types of teams again. This is the one and only match up they’ll get with the absolute bottom of CONCACAF. The worse shape Canada will realistically be in next year is in Group B, which will be against the Saint Kitts and Nevis and Guadeloupes of the world.

Best case is a home and home with the US or Mexico next year. That’s a realistic outcome as the top 12  nations will be in league A. Even after 8-1, Canada was still in the top 12.

Most people understand how important it will be to blood the young Canadian players in Central America and the Nations League provides the opportunity to do just that. San Pedro Sula? Bring it. Please.

Beyond Canada, the Nations League will also help countries like the US Virgin Islands by simply giving them games. Once they settle into the bottom group they’ll play competitive games against competition that is suited for them. The hope is that they’ll improve to the point where if there is a next time that Canada has to play them there might actually be a slight chance of the upset.

That’s probably a while away, but it’s nice to see CONCACAF addressing this issue, which has been around for a long time. The truth is they aren’t asking the bigger nations to sacrifice much. The US and Mexico will still have plenty of windows available to book glamor friendlies (and will probably get a competitive game against each other in the Nations League every year). Basically, everyone wins.

So, sit back and enjoy a rare stress free game involving Canada on Sunday. Bet the over.

So far I love the Nations League format in UEFA and CONCACAF. Seeing bottom feeder teams actually have chances at victories and in the case of UEFA, automatic qualification to the Euros. The more games these smaller countries get, the better it will be for the rest of the countries.

^^^Used to play WOSL games in Delhi. Always had to watch out for the obviously too good for a district level amateur league Jamaican guys that got brought in as ringers on temporary work visas to work on the tobacco farms. Hard to believe a small town in rural SW Ontario could be such a den of iniquity.

    • Will this replace the free hot dogs from Maple Lodge Farms?
    • First noticed during the Panama match and then on CPL Outcome matches but officially announced today is the hatching of an eggciting partnership with Burnbrae Farms. You may have noticed their sponsorship of CPL Eggstra Time on OneSoccer. They will be helping in CPL player visits to youth clubs & Eat Like a Pro contests. And expect product sampling such as possibly via bite-size omelletes or scotch eggs at a CPL match next year. So, already in the top 3 for most engaged with CPL/Canada Soccer. It has been at least a year since the last sponsorship announcement, continues trend of most sponsors opting for both CPL & Canada Soccer (including Cdn Championship) and first under Blue (but no Canada Soccer announcement yet). It also fills another segment of the chicken sponsorship food chain - now need a chicken restaurant.  There are also some on social media who regularly attack Burnbrae for caging hens.

    • I prefer two legs because it gives both teams home games.   That’s my biggest problem with the CPL’s playoff format - a team could win the Cup without their fans ever getting a home game.
    • The boys break down the goal.com ranking the top 7 players in the region.  I must say I agree with most of their criticism of the article.  I'll also say this (hopefully it doesn't give anything away): The narrative that Davies has fallen off, regressed, etc....I really think it's gone too far.......his season under Tuchel was his worst yet....but he was still playing a lot for Bayern....one of the best clubs in the world....and although they (shockingly) failed to win anything last term....they played in a UCL semi final....and Davies scored a screamer off the bench....doesn't do much to change the narrative....then he's played at LB for country....which he captains btw....which make it to the semi final of Copa btw....and somehow his performance is seen as a let down.....just because folks can't wrap their head around Davies not being the focal point of Canada's attack.....Davies had a quiet Copa America going forward....but a strong Copa America in the back....and he was a left back. maybe Davies is a victim of his success.. Last comment (this one is a spoiler)....but I just don't see it with Jedi.....maybe I need to watch more Fulham...good player....but no longer the overrated player of the past if you look at how people are talking about him in the present.
    • updated MLS salary guide numbers (as of september) are out. whitecaps are 12th in salary spending ($17.4m), stuart armstrong is on $2.8m https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5870076/2024/10/24/lionel-messi-mls-salary-guide-top-earners/
    • No. Your question was about how to convince people to pay money for something of a lesser quality. That's a fair question if we're asking how to get West Ham and Villa fans to pay to watch Grasshopper vs Lodz - but nobody considering for removing more middling English, German, et. clubs is asking or expecting that. That loss is a given. Fans of those clubs ranked 3-7 in the top five leagues definitely financially important to the Euro competitions - as a block - because they bring a reliable mass of big stadiums and deep pockets, year in year out. They wouldn't be there otherwise (just like they didn't used to be there in previous iterations years past when it was a tighter shop. They're not giving clubs like ours an in for the good of competition!) As for the Conference League, don't get me wrong I woulda enjoyed the win, but it felt iffy the whole way through. (Heck even the Champions League this year - it's a blast, though a fleeting one I'm sure - but I don't blame some of these big clubs for thinking "I have to play the fourth best team in England last year?") But you don't have to feel that way. I'm never going to knock tribalism or irrationality - they are what make sports and fandom so fun. Glad you enjoyed it!
    • What? So club play & Copa doesn't count? Did GC fall into the 23/24 cutoff?
